  3. So the pump under kitchen sink is leaking pretty bad and the water flow from the tap has gone a bit spluttery along with it! The pump feeds the shower, bathroom sink and kitchen sink. The leak seems to be dripping from the vacuum side of the pump (the side drawing from the water tank), and it appears to be a clear and transparent connector / seal between the hose and the pump that is leaking, rather than the pump itself. Any ideas what this piece is and how I go about replacing it? :-S

  4. It strikes me that two current topics in this forum neatly illustrate the fact that the CRT can't do right for doing wrong sometimes. On the one hand, we've had a series of anecdotal reports of incidents involving cyclists in which people and pets have been or could have been injured. Each report is followed by howls of indignation that the CRT are ignoring a serious safety issue, won't act until a child is killed, etc. On the other hand, we have the CRT proposing to put up railings on Marple Aqueduct in response to reports of incidents in which adults and children have been at risk of falling to their deaths. Cue equally indignant howling that it's health and safety gone mad, no one has actually died yet so what's the problem, etc. I honestly pity the poor souls at the CRT whose job it is to come up with proportionate, realistic, balanced responses to these issues. Whether they're getting it right is always going to be debatable, but one thing we can be sure of is that they're never going to please everyone.

  7. Why do you not wish to use paraffin? I have been restoring and using Oil lamps in my home for thirty years or more, and only use paraffion, If a lamp wick is trimmed correctly, and the correct chimney is used it should not smoke or leave any significant smells when extinguished. Lamp Oil is basicly the same stuff as paraffin, it may have been refined a little more to reduce smoking, but don't count on it. The main difference is that it will have had a different perfume added and is available in a range of fancy colours. It can be purchased from Argos or places like Homebase but it is about four times as expensive as paraffin, clear lamp oil can be obtained fromn these people:- http://www.clearcraftoilcandles.co.uk/lamp-oil-oil-dye/clear-lamp-oil.html

  9. The land adacent to a pub on the offside is not always owned by the pub. I know of two, one on the K&A, and one on the N. Oxford where the land is fenced off and leased by CaRT to commercial undertakings, and there are probably more that i have not noticed. It would seem to be different on the Thames where it seems the land is always owned by the pub, and the manager's have always been very willing to allow me to moor there, irrespective of whethr I had a meal or not,

  10. As I've been looking around for data deals they've just opened this offer up again - http://shop.ee.co.uk/campaigns/summer-sim-from-ee £10 gets you a PAYG Sim 1GB of data + 100GB a month for 2 months. Should tide me over until I decide whether or not to stump up for the £40 a month for 50GB.

  11. Thanks for all the feedback. I've already gone and done it... I put a deposit on Lily Rose yesterday. I offered the full asking price, subject to survey, as it had already been reduced by £5k when we saw it, but to include everything on board so I haven't got to go out and buy new stuff (no boat to transfer stuff from and not moving out of our house). I've seen the 2014 survey (done when current owner bought the boat but now selling due to job loss) but I'm also trying to sort my own survey for additional peace of mind. The external photos of the boat were deceptive in regard to tumblehome. It looked fine to me and the previous survey also confirmed this. We looked at half a dozen boats in the morning in order to have something to compare Lily Rose to. One seemed pretty reasonable but no wow factor, one was ok but too small, the others looked well rough despite two of them being a bit dearer. However, these were all at Whilton Marina which I now realise is possibly not the best place to look for benchmarks but the process is easier there. When we went to see Lily Rose it was a completely different kettle of fish. As soon as we saw it, inside and out, it just felt right. Even my wife, who was a lot less keen on buying a boat than me, said "I love this boat" within minutes of being on board. Just gotta hope the survey doesn't throw up any serious issues.

  14. Tony. Stop talking rubbish you have never seen the Nene in flood, you're talking complete crap. The boat would have been lost with your method as well. Seriously boys and girls, I don't know why he persists with this line, many have been caught out at locks by the pull of the weir/sluice. Perhaps had these boaters had Tony's special powers they wouldn't have got into difficulty?

  15. There are aspects of boat maintenance where DIY knowledge is not cost effective, engine maintenance is one of them. You need to know how to do basic checks, maybe change the oil and filters, but you could waste a lot of time acquiring knowledge that you will never have to put into practice and therefore forget in time. Same with welding. I know lots of boat owners who bemoan their lack of welding ability. but there's no point in learning it unless you are likely to stay in practice and the average boat owner will hardly ever need to call on such skills.

  16. Quite. Don't kid yourself you'll be choosing which boat to buy. The right boat will choose YOU. When you eventually view the right boat you'll have no choice in the decision to buy it. (Which you will have to do of course, regardless of the results of any survey you might commission )

  20. OK, some further comment on the Aintree boat.... That also only has 8mm bottom - not a problem, but only encountered now on the cheaper builds. Short hull seems to imply short swims - not sure it will be a pleasure to take boating. 3.9Kg gas cylinders are a real pain - you pay nearly as much for 4Kg of gas as you might pay for 13Kg. I think a solid fuel stove is a far better option in a small cruising boat than diesel fired heating, which will cost more to run, and potentially be less reliable. A 4 square foot skin tank seems extremely stingy, even given the small 16HP engine size - I wouldn't want to guess what might happen pushing hard against a strong flow on rivers. My advice is find a decent second hand boat that suits - it will be a far nicer prospect to actually go boating in, and if after a few years you get the bug, and want to upgrade, you will get a far higher proportion of your money back if you sell it on, IMO.
