  4. Nice looking boat and looks like she has been looked after. With regard to the gas bottles- see how you get on; we have the same size and really thought it would be an issue, but it surprises me how long they last. We aren't liveaboards so our usage is obviously lower- but you might be surprised. Its worth seeing how long they last and what the annual benefit would be versus the cost and hassle of adapting the locker

Personally, if I ever manage to get the old varnish off, I'll be thinning the first coat of new varnish with white spirits down to about a 50/50 mix, this will soak right into the grain and dry almost instantly. The second coat will be about 70/30 varnish/white spirit, the third 90/10 and I won't move on to pure varnish until the fourth coat, I'll do seven coats in all.

Bridge 103 on the GU is one of my favorite spots, but I also quite like Abingdon on the Thames, and then there's Hungerford (very handy for shopping and antiques) on the K&A, of course (and I really can't believe I'm typing this, (as I HATED the place when we lived there in bricks & mortar 15 yrs ago) but Milton Keyens is great, but then so is Wallingford & Goring... guess it's a good job we cc

  11. In the light of your wish I think Nicknorman was trying to keep it simple. I think that the term resistance in the second paragraph should read reluctance or inductance as we are dealing with AC current and pulsing magnetic fields. As the current in the stator rises so does the strength of the magnetic fields it produces. As these pulse in and out they induce a back EMF in the stator that depresses the stator voltage. The degree to which it is depressed is proportional to the strength of the current and thus the magnetic field in the stator. Hence as the charging current rises towards the design maximum the charging voltage starts to fall until the lower voltage can just push the design current into the batteries. As the batteries charge the charging current falls as does the bcak EMF so the voltage increases until it is sufficient for the regulator to start to work. This is why in theory it should be impossible to burn out an alternator. It will never produce more current than it was designed to do. However other things like incorrect handed cooling fans, excessively low speed, or high ambient temperature tend to cock this nice theory up.

  15. yes, but on my last trip on the L&L the bottom of my widebeam dredged the entire canal 10ft wide all the way there and back, allowing 2 narrowboats to be able to pass each other, which was impossible beforehand. ;-)

I pootle down the river with it down, then when back home, I put it up then drink wine in it, have a quick ciggy in it, play cards in it, join my animal friends in for tea, join my human friends in it for political and social discussions. I might even put my bed on it and sleep in it forever and ever and ever.

  18. Yawn...as it has been banned by most of the developed world it would seem inevitable you would have to go to somewhere like Turkey to get some. Trich is extremely nasty stuff and has been slowly removed from everything since the 70s, predating the EU's interest by some decades. Dich did replace it in many uses (I recall similar hysterics when I was the COSHH officer in the mid 80s auditing all the nasties in the lab though nobody was blaming the EU back then) but it is still pretty dodgy and best kept in safer conditions than your average DIY shed. If we didn't have EU directives then the British Safety Standards would be applying similar if not stricter controls (the EU, after all uses guidelines pioneered by the UK to reach its decisions on such matters). If you don't like H&S regulations then move to Bhopal because they are here in the UK to stay, Europe or not.

  21. I think there are about 14 registered Comfortably Numb's of which 8 are narrowboats. As for the article, for those who don't read the mag it's a regular feature called 'me and my boats' where folk talk about boats they've owned or hired over the years. I decided to send something in and got £100 for it. Some of you are poo pooing those mags but I happen to think they are generally a very good read, especially Canal Boat mag. Naturally there is a small element of 'same old' as it must be hard for them to come up with totally new stuff all the time, but it's the same with whatever type of media. Take this forum for example. I think it's wonderful and it's the only one I go on, but there's a heck of a lot of crap and inane drivel (as is already happening on this thread, LOL) as well as the really good stuff.
