  3. Not really a very helpful contribution Henk. Having had our boat broken into once, I have the greatest empathy for Steve, I well remember the phone call in the early morning, and having to drop everything to visit and secure the boat. I hope the damage is minimal and can be rectified easily.

  4. As a former English teacher I first found Tree's use of "moi" a trifle offensive and difficult to read. English has a certain "flow" to it and using "moi" breaks the flow. But I thought her posts were worth reading so now I just substitute the correct English pronoun for "moi" wherever it appears and it takes all of about three paragraphs and your mind is programmed to not even see the "moi"s anymore. Aside from the "moi" thing, she uses very good punctuation, which makes her writing clear and easy to understand. Have you ever tried to read the garbage written by clowns who think it is cute to omit any and all punctuation or capitalization? Anyway, Tree seems to have a good heart and she effectively communicates what she wants to say. Since what you say about her writing is way off base from a linguistic standpoint, and pretty obtuse from a humanistic one, perhaps you should look within and try to gain a little introspect into your own insecurities rather than try to project them on her.

  5. I am afraid that mayalld has never forgiven me for winning a protracted 6 year court battle against BW/CaRT’s section 8’ing of a half dozen boats in my care. This case he had derisively scorned as “the charade of a case that is about little more than your belief that you have found a clever way of avoiding paying your way . . . frankly somebody who avoids paying towards the upkeep of the waterways he uses, and then expects BW/CRT to pay for his many days in court to try and argue ever more obscure reasons why he can avoid paying anything is no hero.” His first comment on the result of the [successfully appealed] judgment of 2012 was: “The man is a freeloader, who not only isn’t paying his way, but has caused BW to spend a significant amount of money on indulging his desire for a day in court.” He never did account for the fact that I voluntarily paid for 3 of the licences regardless of my position that it was not necessary. His prognostications as to eventual outcome were: “From reading the judgement, there seems little prospect that Mr Moore will be granted any permanent relief from being evicted. Rather, I suspect that, like the previous criticism, the outcome will be that BW went about it the wrong way, and should have been more particular in ensuring that their processes are right, and that in consequence Mr Moore will be allowed a 6 month period of grace before the vessel has to be removed.” In the event, as you will doubtless have garnered from Richard’s google search, I was proved right and the Notices were quashed as illegal. Evidently, resentment at this reversal of mayalld’s expectations has had the unfortunate effect of creating permanent perceptual problems as to the content and intent of my life and postings. It is a pity, because aside from gratuitous nastiness at times [which had appeared to be diminishing of late], he has the ability to see and communicate on most other matters with some intelligent insight, which is reflected in a majority of his generally useful posts. I would hope that most would be capable of taking whatever I write at whatever face-value they perceive in that, without feeling a need to discern some imagined agenda.

  6. Back in the autumn a short cold snap caused me to pick up a bag of Taybrite on my way home from work. It was ok and stayed in pretty well. Average heat output but the big downer was the amount of ash it produced. Masses of it. Price was medium, I'd say. 7/10 coz I'm generous. Then I got a delivery of 10 bags of Supertherm from coalboat Roach. I've quite liked this stuff in the past but I have to agree with the recent long running thread on this. It's not what it used to be. Leaves some suspicious looking residues and also creates a lot more ash than I'd like. Overall it's very similar to Taybrite in my opinion but slightly cheaper. 7/10. I then got through 3 bags of an un-named 'smokeless fuel' bought locally and a definite improvement over the previous two fuels. Burns longer and hotter with less ash but a bit pricier. 8/10. Then I tried 1 small 10kg bag of 'Brazier' bought from Home Bargains. It was suprisingly good and cheap. Similar burning characteristics to supertherm but less ash and cheaper. If I didn't have to transport it myself, I'd consider using it regulary. A good back up when the coal boat isn't due for a while. 8/10. I then bought 5 bags of Homefire Ovals. Expensive at around £12 a bag but by gawd is it worth it! Stays in almost endlessly and gives a lovely constant heat. Medium ash content. I found I was getting through around two thirds of the amount of coal using this compared to other brands. 9.5/10. I then gave Stoveglow a try, buying 5 bags. This was noticeably cheaper than Taybrite / Supertherm. Tends to burn quite hot and fast so needs careful control of the air-vent to keep in well. Lowest ash so far. A great fuel at the price. Heats up quick so a good choice for spring/ autumn when you might not want to keep your stove on 24/7. 9/10. Recently, I've also been burning compressed fire-logs from Home Bargains which they were selling for £2.49 for a pack of 6. They burn hot and don't last ages but are handy for an evening fire at this time of year. Suprisingly hard to light properly though, I tend to mix with a few bits of Stoveglow. Last winter (2012/2013) I was mostly burning a fab fuel called Long Beach. I've only ever seen it for sale in one place and this is what I found out about it: "As its name suggests, this is a by-product of the petrol refining industry. Most of the fuel is imported into this country from the United States. Long Beach Nuts and Lumps are authorised for use in smoke control areas because they are low in sulphur. Other Pet Cokes are not authorised. The product burns very hot and is often sold as a blend with other fuels to enhance the burning characteristics. However, because of the heat and the low ash content of the product, it can cause damage to appliances if the concentration of petroleum coke to other fuels is too high." Well, I didn't generally blend it and I simply kept the air supply very low and I found it brilliant. Almost no ash at all and with careful control can be kept in for a long time. If any one knows of a supplier near Birmingham, let me know! It was very cheap too. 10/10. I hope some of this was useful. I may continue to experiment next year.

  8. I too am rather new to this forum, but, one thing I've noticed is that people here are more than willing to engage you in a lively, opinionated, debate wherein you will never agree, but they'll buy you a pint both during and after that debate. You won't make any enemies here just by not agreeing with the old timers, just remember to keep it courteous and no one will be your enemy just because you disagree.

  9. Except it is actually a "string 'em up/set the punishment to suit the crime" debate really, isn't it. Nobody ever responds to the posts wishing violence on the perpetrators with calls to reward them. I hope whoever has broken into any boat is caught and brought to justice...Justice being a reasonable punishment for a petty crime. I suspect nobody hopes for any less.

  10. Now, before anyone gets over excited, remember that the (alleged) perpetrator(s) is (are) not really to be held to account. They are victims themselfs, who have been failed by our society. You should really thank them, for showing you the security weakspots of your boat.

  13. Are people that live in boats, second class citizens ?. Well as far as I am concerned, I just don't really care what group people wish to pigeon hole me in. I like where I am, and all is fine in my word.what ever class that is. So long as they have got Cider & Donuts !.

  14. How nice of you to be concerned, it must be an awful burden on you, having to read the whole internet and step in when you think someone has insecurity issues. Just looking at it from another angle, maybe the fact that you feel you need to intervene and pass comment on some astonishingly personal stuff based on psuedo psychology might suggest an inability to look at your own securities. And calling someone 'Deirie' is just creepy and conjours up unwanted images of Michael Winner.

  15. My belief is that whilst not necessarily viewing 'alternative' living as "second class" there will always be misunderstandings and questions about the people taking up any lifestyle that is 'outside of the norm*' (4 walls, a job and 2.4 children) I think this applies to 'travellers', 'mobile home dwellers' just as much as boat owners. The perceptions may well be that boat-dwellers are there through no choice of their own and, like 'travellers', are looking for a cheap way to live. They do not understand that many boat owners (and travellers) choose this way of life. I can understand when non-boaters see continuous moorers who have spread out over the towpath, have 'rubbish', scrap, bits of wood, bags of coal and washing out that it will look like a Gypsy encampment and boaters will get tarred with the same brush. We portray an image by our actions - if (or when) 'we' lived in a house did we allow the paint to peel off, never cut the grass, have scrap bicycles in the garden etc etc. We do not need to have 'shiney, newly painted. boats' but we can manage our environment to portray a caring, sharing attitude. * Normal = the consensus of the majority, According to an established norm, rule, or principle; conformed to a type, standard, or regular form Enough of the late night waffle.

  17. I can understand your point of view but it is stretching things to think this is how it is like all over by a limited sample or experience. I partly grew up in Swindon I knew all our neighbours and because my father was an engineer in the Railway works I had a wide extended family from the very social group of work colleagues. I then lived on a farm for a while and on the edge of Swindon in a very close community. When married we have always lived in small communities and my experience has been like Carlt's. I know all our neighbours and we do things for each other when needed. I am about to move hopefully for the last time in to an even smaller community in Wales and I expect it to be no different and probably closer still. It is good that you have found that sense of community living on a boat too. To answer the OP In the sense of 2nd class being inferior in some way then this can only be if ones mindset allows it. It is only an attitude and can be risen above of those whose assumptions and bigotry makes such judgements. Don't be a victim, know your own value which is equal to anyone else.

Why he feels the need to continue to grumble at moi posts, when they bother him so much is a mystery, he knows what to do to make him feel better

  19. It remains my view that you engage in endless litigation not in order to protect what may be regarded as equitable rights, but in the hope of eventually getting a perverse judgement that either resurrects some long defunct right that is not equitable or establishes some new right through finding an unintended hole in the law. As an acedemic exercise in the study of the law, it is interesting. As a way of protecting the rights of boaters, it is an abject failure. You cost CRT shed loads of money that would be better spent on maintaining the canals, and gain a few people the right to avoid paying their equitable share of the costs of the waterways. The vast majority of boaters lose out because of your actions. As to your motives, what I wrote is just a précis of what you wrote.

  20. I think there may be some serious insecurity issues, and whilst I'm perfectly happy to accept that she can post whatever she wants, so can I. I'm not the slightest bit offended, but her motivation interests and concerns me. All I can see is 'look at me, I'm an individual, I'm so much a one-off that I can post in whatever form I want and if you don't like it, tough, I don't care'. Telling me (or anyone else) that we can just use the 'ignore' facility is a bullying tactic asserting a desire not to modify inappropriate behaviour. I'm just trying to understand why. Many bullies were themselves bullying victims when younger. It's called the real world, dearie.

  21. You'll not be bothered about the tunnel falling in then will you! Do you actually know which smartarse members have marina moorings then? Assuming I'm one of your smartarses, I'm sorry to disappoint, but neither of my boats has a marina mooring.

  23. Phylis /NC/Rachel You're making yourself seem even more ridiculous than normal. Please stop, I'm embarrased for you. I think you like to think of yourself as a big hitter on this forum but most of your posts are simply rebuttals of an argument without reasoned explanation, or increasingly, insults of other members. It really adds nothing. The members list shows you te be one of the most prolific posters but your approval rate is amongst the lowest of any at less than 0.8 % of your post count. The average for most posters seems to be 4% to 8%. Interestingly Joelsanders was 26% when i looked. If you dont like what the "angry boater" has to say then dont look, there's really no need to interfere if others wish to engage with the sort of thing that you clearly think is mumbo jumbo. By insisting on participating in the way that you are, you're sort of inadvertantly exposing your inadequacies.

  24. Fortunately it doesn't much matter. If a totally open circuit alternator is run-up and does self excite the process is, in electronic terms, very slow and the regulator will regulate fast enough to maintain the terminal voltage pretty much at the regulated setting. If the alternator is the subsequently connected to a load the regulator can manage that too, albeit there is likely to be a bit of a dip in the output voltage till it catches up. If however an on-load alternator has the main output open-circuited the regulator is rarely able to shut down fast enough and the resulting voltage spike will probably seriously upset the alternator diodes.
