Bridgewater moorings

I am looking at buying a narrow boat with a view to livaboard and would love to stay on the Bridgewater as I still work and grandchildren here, although the Bridgewater is proving to be a nightmare. I really didn't want to go down the route of a residential as I don't see the point as it is no cheaper than living on dry land and to get your monies worth you would have to stay and use the facilities as much as possible which defeats the object really!!!! I am told you cant constantly cruise the Bridgewater and are unable to get a bridgewater licence without a mooring!!! I cant find any moorings available I have telephoned everywhere and they are all full with waiting lists (I have asked who has these waiting lists but no one seems to know even Peel Holdings)???? Does anyone know of any moorings available on the Bridgewater???? I know there is a new marina opening at Pennington Wharf but no overnight stays between November and March unless you have residential mooring at a cost of 3600 which on top of council tax and all the other maintenance which goes with your boat I feel is steep. Please can anyone help and advise

Hi Debbie

The Bridgewater is a nightmare and as it's privately owned by Peel Holdings. They seem to be able to make up rules, and change them as often as they like.

I have a couple of friends that moor on the Bridgewater and you're right, you can't get a license without a mooring. However even with a home mooring you're not 'officially' allowed to live aboard on The Bridgewater. Well not unless you're one of the few that seem to be allowed to. How one gets this special dispensation is a little like the list of available moorings. It exists but getting access to it is impossible.

I also have children and yes I know I don't look it but grandchildren too. They all live in and around the Stockport area.

I am a continuous cruiser but I tend to sail around the Cheshire Ring. I can get to Manchester/Stockport easily on public transport, even from the furthest point of Kidsgrove. There are regular trains from Kidsgrove station to Manchester and from anywhere else along the route it's a 20 minute bus ride.

If you want a Marina there are plenty along the way. However there are lots of towpath moorings with access to shops etc.

I'd stay off the Bridgewater except for the festivals in Lymm. Lymm is a lovely village with lot's going on. It's a pity that Peel Holdings want to see it closed to CaRT craft.

I hope this is of use
