Bridgewater moorings

I am looking at buying a narrow boat with a view to livaboard and would love to stay on the Bridgewater as I still work and grandchildren here, although the Bridgewater is proving to be a nightmare. I really didn't want to go down the route of a residential as I don't see the point as it is no cheaper than living on dry land and to get your monies worth you would have to stay and use the facilities as much as possible which defeats the object really!!!! I am told you cant constantly cruise the

Electron Tubes Vs Semiconductors

Ever wondered what the difference is between a valve or electron tube and a semiconductor? Which is better? What about sound?   The simple difference is the electron tube needs much more voltage to work than does a transistor. Another huge difference is the electron tube diode conducts through free electrons within the tube. That is, whereas in semiconductors the electrons orbit a nucleus of an atom (silicon atoms, for example), with tubes the electrons are free.   Tubes are actually quite s

Vintage Electronics/Engineering

If this publishes O.K., a few words of introduction: I thought it would be a good idea to do a blog on vintage radio and vintage marine engineering as well. However, with respect to boat engineering it will be less "vintage" and more "eighties" when boaters were keeping it simple with prop-generators, TWC regulators, split-charge battery banks and, yes, large and noisy engines.   As to the radio side, I repair radio equipment from the Thirties, Forties, Fifties and Sixties. I'm not an expert b

Information about living aboard

Hi to all out there. I am looking at buying a narrowboat in the future and before I go down the route of viewing vessels and being told by sellers whilst viewing, what they think I want to hear, I would like some neutral, non biased opinions and information about living aboard. I have a budget and it isn't a kings ransom and I am happy to live on something that I can improve as I live on it. My main worry is making sure I buy something with a good engine (supplied by a reputable manufacturer)

TO ALL STATICS ON UK MARINAS

MARINA LODGE OWNERS FIGHT UNLAWFUL ENVIRONMENT AGENCY TAX Residents of waterside homes at a Cambridgeshire marina, many of them pensioners, are determined to fight demands that they pay an unlawful £430 annual river tax imposed by the Environment Agency or face heavy fines and a criminal record. The caravan/lodge homes are on permanently fixed floating pontoons and connected to main services. They cannot be fitted with engines and with no means of propulsion are incapable of navigation on t

Boat repairs and moorings

Slipway services, was started at Uplands Basin Marina. By myself. I have since left the marina, and I now work out of Kings Lock boat yard, middlewich. Our quality and reliability is second to none. Uplands Basin Marina, has retained my business name, but the chap who now runs the slipway, has no qualifications in the boat repair business. And has no right to be working on boats. So please, if you hear bad things about "Slipway Service" remember, we are not related to the Uplands one any more! w

Grey water

Am I missing something? I have been thinking for a month or two, why not recycle the water from the bath or shower to flush the loo ( macerator type ). I'm not thinking of keeping the lot just 5 or 10 gallons enough to eek out the fresh water. I'm not thinking of saving the water fron the galley or bathroom sink that would be too complicated filtering it. The G/W tank would be in the corner of the kitchen with the toilet near by in the bathroom. When the tank is full it will overflow through th

Mid Winter

As needs must, had to move the boat from Orchard Marina near Northwich to Bollington last week. A distance of no more than about fifteen miles as a crow flies......but by canal, a three day voyage, not forgetting the grind up Heartbreak Hill and the Bosley fight on the Macclesfield. We couldn't have picked a worse time weather wise, setting off on Tuesday the third of Feb with a forecast of North Westerly winds up to force nine with hail, snow and freezing conditions. It really was bloody freez

So much for a smart charger

So smart it packed up after 6 weeks. All part of the cost of boating I expect. Stove all sorted and managed to get a few embers still hot by 7 the next morning so a little improvement will sort out the winter problems. New sofa all in now no thanks to delivery guys dumping it next to the boat and telling me they have to get off to Newcastle as they are late. A few helpfull bodies managed to get it through the front door with an inch to spare all round.   New replaicement charger being installe

4 Days in

Having bought the 50' cruiser stern "Green Knight" in mid August, after replacing 4 previously neglected batteries and installing a smart charger we are now 4 days into being bona fide live aboards.   Lighting the stove has just about been mastered but the real trick now, largely due to the looming freezing nights is to get the thing to stay lit all night long until the morning.   The view from the boat is very different from the view from our old first floor house window across a sprawling

Almost 2 years on.

Still good..nearly 2 years after I did the Newcastle diet. I haven't put on much weight since I did the diet. Have been 'reviewed' with full tests at my local surgery..and I'm still classed as 'normal'. I don't take any drugs any more..but..because I was diabetic for some years..I do occasionally get 'hypos' that are self induced with no medication ?. The doctor doesn't know why..but I recognise the signs and have some Weetabix or similar. I feel good..and my digestive system changed completely
