THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

I'm puzzled. Insurers don't normally need to know the shell builder, or who fitted it out. Or have you tried telling them "Unknown"?

Going south on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, one of the canals not suffering from low water roulette, to find it is suffering from inattentive boater roulette. Ebstree lock gates have been rammed and navigation closed. Plenty of boats turning at Whitwick.

Getting a flue collar machined to take your 5 inch flue could be a good option as Tony suggests. I can't help feeling you were a little unwise to try to fit a standard 5" flue to a narrowboat. If it's the usual 5" flue bought in 1 metre lengths and 1 to 1.5mm thick it won't last long on a boat anyway. I think you might have to consider starting again with 4.5inch/115mm flue and you will be able to use a standard collar ( or reuse yours ?) You might have to go down the fabrication route if you can't find the right offset in 4.5inch.

I have a 140mm OD flue pipe which is about 5.5". As you say, there is no standard narrow boat collar for that size flue. I got hold of a short section of very thick wall pipe which was about 6.25" ID and had it welded into the roof making sure only a few inches protruded. It's been in place for over 20 years without a problem. I think it's at least 8mm wall thickness so acts as a heat sink like a collar. It doesn't corrode or rot so no issues like that. However, your next problem is finding a chimney (or a pipe to use as a chimney) which will fit your welded in pipe collar. But that will be the same if you get a bespoke cast iron collar made. If you can't find anything that goes over the pipe collar you could always find something that fits snuggly inside the pipe collar as long as you use a storm collar on your chimney just above. Also remember that the chimney and flue pipe are not supposed to touch each other, that's part of the job of the roof collar. You don't want any potential small movement of the chimney affecting the position and sealing of the flue below. Just make sure you size everything up before you start cutting holes in the roof, welding, etc, or before you decide to order a new bespoke cast iron collar.
