Mac of Cygnet
On CRT's boat winterising page, it says: Ventilation can be improved by use of wind socks, which are sold specifically for ventilating boats. These will deflect most of the winter weather and allow proper ventilation of the cabins. What are these things? They can't be anything like any wind sock I've seen (or comes up in a Google search!). Delta9
http://www.yachtshop.it/eng/index.php?cerca=wind+sock&b=&pag=search not sure how it would work on a narrowboat... Edited November 8, 2014 by Delta9
MtB
I think that bit must have been written by a Google jockey who has never seen a canal boat! MtB
Delta9
maybe they meant "wind scoop"
Neil2
I'm very confused, these wind socks are for deflecting air into the boat aren't they? I'm perplexed how you would employ one in the winter.

mattlad
maybe they meant "wind scoop" Aren't they called dorade vents?
mattlad
Ah-ha! Just done some research, it is called a cowl ventilator and the box it sits on is the dorade box. The idea of the dorade box is to prevent water from entering the boat with the incoming air.

FadeToScarlet
Hummm.... Has ANYONE here ever used anything like this? I read an article about using them to ventilate your boat...... MtB
Hummm.... Has ANYONE here ever used anything like this? I once purchased a pair of very nice polished brass cowl ventilators from UBC. Far too pretty to put on a narrowboat so I have them sitting about in my Aladdin's cave of a living room. They'd look really cool on the REGINALD but I'd have to paint them or I'm sure they'd get nicked. MtB
