Anyone got pics you could post on dark blue and cream colour schemes for a narrowboat ?.

We are having our repainted soon and fancy dark blue sides with cream borders and cream roof and maybe a red full length red portion on the hand rail part (flat rail not tube ).

It would be interesting to see yours.

Nearly describing Blue Moons paint job, however we decided against a cream roof as it can be very bright on a sunny day for the steerer, but then it does get hot on a sunny day - not that we have had too many in the last year  .

I was gonna mention that. I had a bright white undercoat on my roof for a while and steering even on a cloudy day was absolute hell. I don't know how much better cream would be but I'm definitely sticking to my raddle red now.

Hi

As a long term boater and someone who works in the boat painting business as a signwriter and boat decorator, I too would caution against a cream roof. On a bright day the glare can be pretty unbearable and any light colour is going to show dirty marks very quickly, especially if sanded, unless you are prepared to keep it scrupulously clean. Either grey or raddle red would sit well with blue in my experience. Which blue? Your call, of course, I often find Oxford blue or midnight popular choices...navy too

On a purely personal note, I find the modern option of a single colour all over to be bland. Narrow boats carry colour well, although I understand the economics of the monochrome approach. I favour strong , regal colours. Pastel shades seem less successful to my eyes.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks for all the pics. Please keep them coming !.

On a side note, I was told by a couple of painters to avoid dark colours on the roof because of the heat they absorb. They said they had known internal wool paneling i.e. wall to ceiling to have joints open up due to the heat being absorbed.

Tell me if this is nonsense.

I have a nearly white ("ivory") roof which neither causes glare or is difficult to clean. It is not sanded, but does have a "non-slip" additive added to the paint. It doesn't make it particularly non-slip (my gunwales etc are sanded) but it does put enough texture into the surface to adequately reduce glare. It is still quite smooth on the surface so just as easy to clean as a normal roof. And it certainly keeps the boat cooler in summer than a dark roof.

We had a white roof and the glare was a problem. Being a blue boat with a white roof wasn't a good idea since it made us look like one of the college cruisers hire fleet. We've now gone for "red oxide gloss" which now makes us look like a GUCCO boat!

My boat is due a repaint this year and I'll be going for a light roof again. The improvement on cooling is significant IME, and if it's sunny enough for glare to be a problem I'll be wearing B) anyway.

Our boat has remained Oxford Blue on side panels through repaints - to my eye the colour appears lighter on large panels than you might think looking at the tins or colour swatches. We have had red roofs in the past but changed it to a mid grey, keeping red handrails.

Raddle red is probably OK but I would caution against using a bright gloss red on the roof as this colour is inherently prone to UV fading in the sunlight. Even after one season, it is impossible to blend in new paint and touch up the handrails, so we tend to leave it until the handrails are repainted end to end.

Looks like Mr Trackman's satnav has fallen in the cut. Unless it's an otter flap - hard to see from this angle.

No its just typical canal junk which floated up when the lock was refilled after a stoppage. Chateau was the first boat through after BW repaired the cill which had been ripped out by a deep drafted boat.

Pastle colours work for me.I have a cream sanded roof, I don't find glare a problem, it doesn't hold heat keeping the boat cool.It does show dirt more easily I will admit, does'nt take long to wash though. All individual choices,I really love Valhalla's matt black look but I wouldn't be brave enough.
