I was interested in buying a recon boiler but people have asked why I don't just get the Eberspacher fixed. I've taken some pics and it looks like it's going back to nature but it was p$$ing with rain today and I couldn't be bothered clearing the leaves out before I took the photos.

So - given I have no idea how you switch the thing on, should I just bin it and start again or get an expert (who hasn't been on Rogue Traders) out to take a look....

And I thought the calorifier thing was confusing!

Maybe....you should 'leaf' it alone...?....

Actually..I don't see why...with a good clean up..it shouldn't do the job OK.

I would tend to dismantle it...flush out the water jacket...and decoke...and then work outwards with water/ electrical connections etc..

Also a flush of the whole system...to get sludge out of rads etc..may not go amiss..and refill with antifreeze/coolant.

I seem to 'think'..there's a video on YouTube showing how to dismantle it..?

This is a slightly newer version of my own D5W..so I'm pretty familiar with strip down and repairs..

Is there not...a control panel of some sort...?

Oh yeah...and you need to check that none of those leaves have made their way into the air fan....as its pretty frail if it hits anything...

At that age I'm afraid it's probably ready for a new heat exchanger, unless of course the anti freeze / inhibitor has been changed at regular intervals. Which along with whatever other faults it may have probably takes it beyond economic repair (proper repair anyway) to make it reliable for long term continued use. Nothing to stop you stripping it, cleaning it and making sure all DC terminals are tight & bright and replacing those horrid red, yellow, blue, pre insulated car terminals with proper ones. I really wouldn't start throwing any real money at it though.

Off topic but related.

I notice that you tend to link to very large photos so those of us with not so fast or mobile broadband wait ages for them to download. This will not endear you to some members. If you want maximum help why not set your camera to a lower resolution (quality) or downsize the photos before posting them. Goodness knows how long it takes for those stuck with dial up!

Sorry Tony. Annoyingly I did resize them and then accidentally uploaded the full size version. I will fix this right now.

Edit: they are now 1/10 the filesize that they were.

Thought as much. Maybe I should get the recon Webasto being advertised in For Sale after all then.

Thanks - David

If its complete with all the looms, pump, controller and has a warranty(a good recon should have) and at the right price probably the right move.

I'm not sure I agree with you...about corrosion...( Disclaimer..has been known to disagree with everyone)

Apart from the leaves I think I would be quite confident with it..knowing the model quite well.

The 'heat exchanger'..as you say...consists of the outer case which you can see..and then an inner..quite thick jacket...a sleave.

The Inner part..is removable..only not likely you will manage that..

Mine has been dismantled over its 15 year life....and in fact the inner sleave actually came out on its own accord once...although this is rare even amongst people that service them...(I'm told that they have tried to do this and its impossible)

When mine did come out..there was zero corrosion although it had a lot of gathered sludge..

It is fairly thick alloy..having to stand up to the heat from the burner.

When you decoke it...you can happily scrub at it to your hearts content with sharp objects with little chance of poking a hole in it.

If you want to ditch it...I'd buy it off you for parts...

That's probably because you haven't been unlucky enough to have seen enough of corroded and porous heat exchangers, a sample of one is really not a material sample is it?

As I said, it's worth a strip and check but once you start throwing any real money at the things you are on a hiding to nothing.

The unit isn't actually that old..it just looks it...

OK...I'll buy it for parts then..!..

PM me....

It is over ten years old, the time when not only do they start to go but all the makers stipulate a heat exchanger replacement on service.

Well I'll bow to your superior and extensive experience then, after all I'm just a factory trained tech that does them every day.

Well that's easily provable, look me up on the Webasto site then East Coast Marine Heating & Electronics, sorry for the company name plug mods, not something I usually do on forums not that I really care what you believe as you seem to be ill informed and ill qualified in this as in so many other areas, anybody just has to type in a London postcode and I will pop up on the Webasto site as the closest factory approved service centre, also if you do the same for advanced level MNEA 0400 standard marine electronic installers you will find I am one of only six qualified to that level in UK.

I now understand why so many of my colleagues counsel against freely giving normally chargeable professional advice on forums. You have in effect, in your last post called me a liar, a personal attack contrary to the TOS which has been reported to the moderators. I think my colleagues are right, it simply is not worth trying to help with unbiased professional advice, I never mention my company name so as not to be judged as touting for business etc but I think I will need to stop bothering, it simply is not appreciated or valued obviously

Please don't stop bothering. Newbies like me value all advice and like to hear several opinions before making a choice.

Thanks

I took out a neverspacher d7w from my barge and replaced it with a Mikuni MX40 (second hand) which is a great reliable bit of kit. Someone will buy the neverspacher regardless of condition because there are so many of them.

I would buy a new mx40 if I did it again but I didn't want to waste money on what people seem to report are crap heaters.

I think its the way they are used-they need a proper run cycle and must never be turned on while in the shutdown cycle as this cleans the combustion chamber every time the thing is switched off. If it is turned on again too quickly it will still have junk in the chamber.
