Speedwheel
Is this what I think it is? Part of an old bilge pump system? I'm sure that some old boats had an engine driven (Parsons?) pump that was connected to something like this in the bilge.

Could be adapted for tea and beer break notifications in the galley.
Chertsey
Doesn't the strainer make it more likely to be part of a water intake system? Although were these not all integrated in GU boats? - using one pump for cooling and for two bilges, with an arrangement of taps/stopcocks to select which was pumped out? Obviously Chertsey now has an air cooled engine but we still have the original pump, albeit not connected to anything, and on Tarporley (also air cooled engine) the engine driven bilge pump is still in use, and volunteers are carefully instructed about which taps and levers not to touch. Ed. to add photo - is this any help at all? Two strainers, both below the waterline - the upper one looking something like yours? Sorry I haven't got a better photo to show their position. I'd be interested to know myself how the system worked and what the plumbing originally would have looked like. Batavia
I think that you are right - the base seems to have little feet to hold it off the bottom. Is there a non-return valve inside (or havn't you tried unbolting the flange yet)? Does Frank know this is going to be installed (or has he told you where to put it)? Timleech
Strum box for bilge pump. Here is a modern plastic one. Yes Parsons clutched gear pumps were fitted on some boats. The National 2D on Vesta had an excellent bilge pump. When boating on the river I could take on extra ballast water and quickly remove it when returning to the canal. The only time this let me down was at Stratford in 1964. We followed the Queen Mum on to the Avon and half a dozen suited dignateries climbed on board for the trip to the theatre. They sat on the roof at the front. After a few minutes I was losing drive with the bow lower than the stern.A quick recall recovered the situation.Happy days.
