In response to a request for further information from Richard / RLWP in the Audlem banter post:-

We now run three fendermaking courses at Audlem Mill each year (see audlemmill.co.uk)

The introductory course requires no previous experience and during this course you will learn about the basics of fendermaking, making two side-fenders and a button fender. Dates are 30/31st Oct 2010 (fully booked I'm afraid) and 5/6th March 2011. Cost is £95 including all materials, instruction, teas / coffees and lunches.

This year we are offering an intermediate level course, which will assume that applicants have some basic knowledge of ropework & fendermaking such as splicing, crowning & half-hitching (having done the introductory course or self-taught). During this course we will look in more detail at core construction & produce a vee bow fender with a turks head. Course dates are 27th/28th November. Cost is £125 including all materials, instruction, teas / coffees and lunches.

If you wish to book on the courses please contact Peter & Christine at Audlem Mill.

Cheers, Brian

Well, the course is at Audlem Mill in Audlem, and the Audlem Banter is in Audlem.

Apart from that...

I thought I'd fender in the day and banter in the evening

Yeah, i have to admit i did very much fail to put two and two together for that last night.

Ive just googled what 'crowning' is im still not really sure.

- Ive never made a fender or been on a course, but with a bit of thought i can produce a splice.

- Is that enough? I learn fairly fast any time im not hung over. Do we get to keep the fender at the end? Are there spaces left?

The chap with the rather large fender is "crowning" (or is it a wall knot?). Taking your top of is optional. Our fenders will not be quite that big but yes everything you make you get to take home.

I think there are 1 or 2 places left on the course and if you you can splice and are keen to learn I'm sure you will manage.

For bookings please call Peter or Christine at Audlem Mill on 01270811059.

It's a continuous left crown sennit over a core, isn't it

Its all right, you can sit next to me and it will all balance out!

So, no takers for my knit your own fender out of doghair course then? I would like to go, but I think I might just be a bit busy that weekend! Mainly cooking Richard and Daniels' breakfast!

Sue, shall we go and do something girly instead - we could go for tea in Nantwich. We'd need to do the slap and bling thing though. I dunno where mine is - think I lost it in 1996 down the back of the settle.....

Sounds like it may have been your old settee we got from the charity shop then ?

Very tasteful, BTW !

Would have loved to try and learn to knit fenders, but as I still struggle with a basic splice, suspect I need the "beyond hope" course, not intermediate !

Nope, can't be mine - basic maths, Mr Fincher ....

Wriggly+taste=oxymoron.

Yes, I need the beyond hope course too when it comes to rope work though I could make the rope :( !

Yep tea in Nantwich sounds good, any interesting little shops of the "I wonder what's in here" sort?

I'm not sure I do "girly", only having sons the chance has never arisen so no slap and bling, can I come any way?

Me neither, much to Ellen's disgust. Nantwich on Saturday it is then - shall you come on Friday evo so Richard can launch forth for his course? I shall cook tea as I will already have Daniel to feed.

That would be good, we were hoping to. Shall I bring pudding? (Where's the eating something nice smilie, there's a drinking one!) :icecream: I found it.
