Now we have booked to go round Warwickshire which guide I have used Pearsons in the past and they have always been simple and easy to use. Never used Nicholsons though which would people recommend?

Both - they have different information in them. Railway lovers have to prefer Pearson as they have lots of info on closed lines etc.

I like and have a set of both.

The simple maps and colourful pros of the text is fun in the Pearson's and the information and detail maps are also useful in the Nicholson's.

Geo Projects and Nicholsons for me, and Imray for the rivers. Mind you some people seem happier with none ... maybe they enjoy the sense of mystery ? We've passed a boater near Bull's Bridge who asked "which way is Paddington", and another on the Thames near Reading who asked "which way is London" (yes really !) ??????

I don't know if I should be surprised or not, but no-one has mentioned the Waterscape PDF Guides. I find them pretty handy.

The simple answer is that Pearson's are pretty and have a bit of anecdotal info that you will not find in the more serious Nic's - but for the accuracy of its maps, mileages and navigational notes - for serious cruising, it just has to be Nic's . . .

We have both, but I tend to consult Pearsons more frequently. I quite like their summary of approximate times per page and the number of locks as a very rough guide for daily route planning.

Another set of useful guides are the First Mate series. Very handy for finding shops, post offices, banks, doctors etc.

Have used Pearson's till now but have just got Nicholson's.

They each have their use as mentioned by others above.

If you want Nicholson's they are available at Amazon for about £9.74 each. P+P free. (recommended retail £14.99)

Ensure you order the correct edition, new one just published March 2009.

I prefer to buy mine from the IWA online shop for £14.99 and know that by so doing I am helping a worthy cause . . .

Definately Nicolsons. They have just all been updated so make sure you get the latest issue.

I use Pearson's in conjunction with the pink Landranger OS maps - useful for getting around the local areas, and I like the chatty style of Pearsons.

I prefer Nic's - I like to always have North at the top of the page!

Even on east - west canals?

I know what you are getting at though and it's my dislike of their guides as Pearsons seem to be able to depict an E - W canal with north to the bottom of the page.

Of course the early editions did not necessarily follow this rule although I don't think they ever printed pages with North towards the bottom of the page

Nevertheless, I think that the supremacy of Nic's was firmly established when they made the change to OS reproductions in full colour and in the correct orientation.

Especially on E-W canals! I like the orientation to be consistent.
