I too remember the BBS's. A few like minded nerds having the same rows (though not boat related of course).

 

Then I moved to France and discovered they already had Minitel! An internet type communications system with (potentially) a terminal in every home.

 

Online shopping, chatrooms, special interest forums (3615ROSBIF was my favourite) and, of course, porn.

 

I do miss my little beige terminal with it's crap graphics and clicky keyboard:

 

 

My first modem was one of those you put the handset into...

 

Problem was that we had a trimphone that didn't fit it so some creative use of yellow pages as wedges and weights was called for

I'll be in mousehole, on a real boat. It can be choppy out there, I'd concentrate on keeping your boat afloat.

 

If I was about, a wave would be welcome. Like I've said before, there's no'one on I've chatted, or crossed swords, with, on this forum who I wouldn't buy a beer. That still stands.

ah but he is 'forced' into making those posts by the attitude of the cliquey in the know aggresive pontificating posters on here....... Im not sure if its the clique who get along and post in the knowledge that life is bad enough without taking stuff you talk about on a glorified television screen too seriously, or if he is talking about the clique who moan and complain about other people who get along and post in the knowledge that life is bad enough without taking stuff you talk about on a glorified television screen too seriously and therefore are on the moral high ground and allowed to call people names and issue veiled insults/threats.

 

Personally I think white is the classic colour for petticoats and they also light up the towpath on the flounce back from the pub...virtual or otherwise.

OK, so now I am in trouble.

 

I can't flounce due to strained ligaments in my foot right now, so that is out of the question. I am spending all my summer out of the marina doing boaty things to get away from the clique there who see fit to bully those who don't fit their ideals to death, so I intend to stay away, for good if I can a darn mooring somewhere online and nicer, but I have respect for a lot of the members on here too.

 

So for those of us who can't flounce or clique very well, can we please have a fence to rest our weary rear ends on, or is that not allowed?

I have been lurking for a while and decided to join today to add my voice.

 

It seems to me that people have different expectations of this forum.

 

This forum probably contains a pretty even cross section of the general public.

 

This means it contains the meek, the mild, the prim, the attention seekers and the bullies.

 

If I don't like something about my life, I change it.

If I can't change it because its beyond my influence and it makes me unhappy, I move on.

 

As another poster pointed out, there are various canal forums out there with different flavours

and styles. If you don't like this one and you are entitled to that opinion, move

on to one you like better.

 

Hopefully, people will then gravitate to the forum that suits them best
