Leaky stern gland greaser

Featured Posts

Good evenings ladies and gents...

As seen in pics below, my greaser is leaking. It appears to be leaking from the bottom where the glass meets the metal work. I was told this always happens and its not worth replacing it as its bound to happen again. Im hoping this isnt the case as I would like to replace it to solve the issue.

Anyone experienced something similar?

Can it be tightened up by screwing the barrel into the base?

If that don't work, maybe clean out the old grease and refill.

It's worth wearing a pair of Marigold's gloves to do this job and throw them away when done.  Then it's not too messy.  I don't see any glass in those photos?

Perhaps fibre glass?

Looks like it just needs the barrel tightening up.

I would take the barrel off , clean all the old grease off the threads and then put the barrel back on tightly.

That should do it. Alternatively you may have something (bit of grit etc) that is stopping the end of the tube sealing properly on the base unit (there's a big fibre washer I think)- so maybe give that a cleanout (messy job) and start again.

I suppose one could put some PTFE tape on the threads but 1) that is not really curing the root cause of the problem) 2)  over time you are bound to get a bit of tape into the greaser itself and that might block the pipe.
