Mac of Cygnet
Further to my question about weed on the Witham a few weeks back, I beat a retreat from Kyme Eau after half a mile, which was rather disappointing, so was expecting the same on the Witham Navigable Drains, but no, it's OK (so far). Wasn't able to get up to Sibsey, where I had confirmed the pub is still open, because of a weed boom at the bridge before - hardly visible, and I would have run into it if I hadn't slowed to read the tiny warning notice. Amazingly, I came through Anton's Gowt with another boat which just happened to turn up. Mooring is a bit ad hoc in these parts. A couple of pictures from today.

Little Dog has no problem with gangplanks; I was telling her to stay where she was so I could take the pic. I was expecting the Drains to be little weed infested ditches, but some are quite wide, like in the Middle Level. Cowbridge lock is an interesting experience, having no landing facilities top or bottom (not even ladders), and no balance beams on the bottom gates. A little bit of ingenuity/agility was required. And one of the bridges on West Fen Drain was a little tight........

Scholar Gypsy
If you've been through Cowbridge you can work out what my sons were doing here, alongside the lock...
Mac of Cygnet
Indeed. The chains weren't much good for closing the bottom gates! The lock was empty when I arrived, so I barged in, and I just about managed to close them from the boat using a boathook when coming out again.
