What is Morris 'ring free' XHD oil?

Featured Posts

A friend of mine was recommended this oil for his Kelvin by a Kelvin specialist.

Its not one I've heard of - does anyone know of it and its suitability for a Lister JP? It's API CF/CF-4/SF/SG whatever that means. And what does 'ring free' mean?

Ring Free XHD monogrades are high quality engine oils particularly recommended for haulage, plant contractors and certain mixed fleet operations. They are manufactured from high quality mineral oils and provide protection against wear, rust and corrosion. The technology used in these oils gives excellent results in 4-stroke turbo-charged and naturally aspirated indirect injected diesel engines and petrol engines requiring monograde oils.

Sounds almost completely wrong for a JP, being direct injection, chrome linered and preferring a lower grade of oil of no more than API-CC

I've been thinking. The JP isn't exactly direct injection, it has a chamber above the piston

As we occasionally get asked for it, Sue is taking some straight 40 and straight 50 to Braunston this year

My Kelvin chum gave me an explanation that it's good for engines with poor filters  as the carbon and dirt is absorbed by the oil and then settles out at the bottom. No, I didn't grasp it either.

Filters, eh. There's a novelty

I remember Junior looking for days for his filter on his Petter on Albion , and finally finding out there was a gauze stuck deep inside the sump somewhere and no filter to replace - I wont mention the Midland based Chandlers that tried to sell him a couple of filters that "should" match.

Now... I have two PH2s here, one air cooled and one water cooled. The air cooled one has an oil filter, which won't fit the water cooled one

I have never really understood why so many chandlers seem to stock the Morris Ring Free oils.  They don't seem very appropriate to the vast majority of diesel engines in canal boats, whether "vintage" or "modern".

I often see lots of this on the shelves, but little or none of the Golden Film types far more appropriate to many boat engines.  (I suppose that could be interpreted that people know its unsuitable so don't buy it!)

PH2s - now they're a whole new story. I discovered the hard way that there are three different non-interchangeable head gaskets!

Oddly, in 10+ years of boating in old engined boats I've never heard of it (hence my question) and always used Golden Film.

I thought I might be missing something but clearly not.

Yes, fun that one, isn't it

One of the reasons I never bought Morris oil from Chandlers is for the same reasons. I always bought it either directly from Morris Oils (when they had offers!) or from Classic Oils in Aylesbury, who were always able to offer a good deal.
