Is aluminium acceptable?

If it is then I could cast my own!

Aluminium is fine. We have two, both with cast aluminium wedge spacers underneath. The paint has been failing quite badly recently but has lasted for 15 years. Once the paint has gone the surface pits quite quickly, especially on the cylindrical part that the chimney fits to. Tried to redo them with etch primer but that failed very quickly. Have now done them with Armourguard epoxy primer which so far is doing very well.

They are quite posh collars with the shell builders name in raised lettering and pretty sure they were cast by Warstock engineering.
