Maybe only one is out of place

The first stoppage notice did say it was the top gate which has been lifted out of the cup.

Latest reports elsewhere suggest that although CRT are offering assisted passage, the gate is opening less and less fully, and that "full width" boats such as working boats are having increasing difficulty passing it.

Just as well there aren't any working boats on the Coventry, unless you mean hire boats?

or should I have said: "But if one's boat isn't working, why would you want to take it through locks.?Bowhauling is so wearysome."

Pedantism at its finest there!

If one is going to communicate, it's best to use the right words, otherwise confusion is created. So when flying, if I want my copilot to turn right but say "left", presumably you would consider it pedantic of the accident investigation board to point this out?

So we must now refer to hire boats as working boats?

Best contact all the hire boat companies and tell them to change their websites, pronto!

I wasn't confused by Alan's post.  I'm a little confused as to why you think anyone would be though?

Just now, Alan de Enfield said:

A 'lady for hire' is known as a 'working girl' so, would a prostitute on a boat be a 'working girl on a working boat ' ?

Working boat girl

Maybe it is being pedantic - but - If I wanted my copilot to turn I would say 'starboard' or 'port'

I'd probably ask him to 'turn to heading...'

Actually ATC don't use port & starboard, they say "Turn left onto heading 285".

Only if you want to, otherwise you could just call them hire boats. But references to "working boats" should be made only in regard to ... working boats!

Just to confuse one of my (ex?) working boats, currently isn't (working, that is...).

Thank Gawd I didn't mention reports that at least one Hudson was in difficulty at the lock!

Very true, but ex-working boats weren't mentioned by Alan.

I'm curious to know if you are also disallowed from saying a "GUCCCo motor boat" or "FMC butty", on the grounds that GUCCCo or FMC no longer own them.

If so, presumably something like "LMS main line steam locomotive" is also no longer a valid description?
