Don't know about the canal but the north of the city is borderline gridlocked,  avoid Brum today if you can

Original message: Due to the unexploded WW11 bomb adjacent to the canal in Aston, we have been advised by the emergency services to close the navigation with immediate effect.

Apparently they are planning on exploding the remains at around 2pm

Silver linings and all that... dozens of Tarmac lorries have been delivering sand to the area and there's apparently now a sandbag wall surrounding the bomb.

It's a sign of the times that I immediately assumed it was a terrorist bomb.

According to the BBC West Midlands news, it could be heard 6 miles away.

I don't know if it was just an odd camera angle but watching on the news the plume of sand that went up appeared to be about three times the height of a multi storey tower block. 

At 500lb the army reckoned it was the biggest UXB ever found in the UK.
