Can't compose messages

I've been trying to send a PM to someone, but can't get as far as a message screen.  I've tried via the little envelope at the top of the page, by going to my profile and selecting messenger, and going to their profile and selecting message.  Every time i select 'compose new' or 'message', either nothing happens or I get something irrelevant popping up or a cursor appears in a place where it can't be used.  I'm given the opportunity to send them a 'public message on their feed', whatever that means, but not to compose a PM.

Anyone any idea what's happening?  I'm on a tablet, Windows 8.1, IE 11.

Do you have another internet explorer to test on, google chrome, firefox, MS edge?

Not on this machine, but I went into internet options and 'restored advanced settings' and hey presto! it's working now.

It's all a mystery to me.

More than likely an update, my windows phone updated yesterday, told me the phone would work faster and better...

 

Its not, its doing some strange things now.
