River Wey and Basingstoke Canal.

Advice please on the above waterways as a place to spend a week or two mid June as a sort of stopover on the way from Crick to Little Venice. We have about eight weeks to get to Little Venice, will be going up the K&A for a couple of weeks so are looking for other places to cruise around enroute. We generally like to be on the move most days for three or four hours. 58 foot NB.

Thanks,

Ian.

Until somebody with current local knowledge comes on.  We spent 4 years on the Wey and found the following-

  • The locks (well lock gear) are very heavy
  • Your run along the M25 until Pyrford - so some noise
  • You need a separate licence plus a 'special' windlass. The entry lock is only open 9-5 (or is it 6)
  • About a couple of days would cover it.
  • Not many places to moor as the NT insist on a V shaped channel
  • I think the Basingstoke has serious problems and you need to book a passage anyway.

Not quite the sort of cruising that most folks are used to. Sad 'cos in the good parts they're both very pretty.

Now wait for someone who doesn't have such a jaundiced view

(Have you considered the Thames above Oxford? )

Thanks for reply. Yes considered Thames above Oxford but have been up there previously. May go again but was weighing up options. This is our first year of having limitless cruising time so its all a little daunting. In a good way obviously.
