Walks from the Cheshire Ring towpath

Featured Posts

We are going to cruise the Cheshire Ring in May for two weeks, which hopefully leaves us some time to explore Manchester city and the more rural parts of the area on foot as well.

So far, White Nancy/Bollington is already on our list, and maybe a day out to Mam Tor/Edale by train from Bugsworth, weather and schedule permitting. Do you have any good recommendations for other walks away from the Cheshire Ring towpath?

Hi Saskia, AFAIK you can't get a train from Bugsworth. Nearest station is Whaley Bridge, and weather permitting it's a lovely walk over Wild Moor to Buxton, then a bus or train back to Whaley. Also, from Congleton walk along the old railway line to Biddulph Grange, NT, just one (busy) road to cross.

In fact, if you are going to Edale, you need to get the train from New Mills Central (different line from the station at Whaley). This line also goes through Chinley.

Only a short walk but once moored up at Latchford, walked down to the ship canal, went across on the ferry then crossed back over at Latchford locks. A picture of the ferry:

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Looks like if we are going for a day out to the Peaks/Mam Tor we'll have to moor near New Mills and depart from the right station (I see now on Google Maps there are 2 stations in New Mills, both on different lines, thanks for noting that out :)), or catch the train from Chinley. How is the mooring at the end of the line at Bugsworth Basin?

Tim, that looks like a proper ferry experience :D Love those kinda things, thanks for the tip!

You can get  information sheets from the Bugsworth info. office & from the Navigation Pub (upper basin)
