Threat to Boat Race Launches

It is generally accepted that diesel engines are safer than petrol engines in boats. But are petrol engines in the historic wooden launches which follow the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race so dangerous that they must be banned? It seems the PLA has banned petrol engine launches from December 2017.

Does the same restriction apply to any of us with petrol-engined boats if we venture onto the tidal Thames?

The Machinery in those Launches is usually ancient though well maintained

Cant see 30 k to convert each one, most of those Boats are owned by Boatyards/Builders,12-15 K would be more like it

They are certainly not 'low wash' the Henley based ones are a Menace when they go to and from Putney each year, although the Upper Thames Speed Limits apply to them they are blatantly ignored.

The speed exemption only applies when they follow the Racing Boats,I do wish the River Authority would remind them of that fact!
