I drove past the site of the proposed Hungerford Marina this morning (as I do often) and I see they have erected a newt barrier around the perimeter of the whole site.

Checking their website they say PP has now been granted, so presumably the construction project will get under way once the site is cleared of them pesky and supposedly rare great crested newts.

Is that to keep them in or out? :P

Are those the same " Rare " great crested newts that seem to be found everywhere?

I think it's to keep them out.

The same thing was done on the site in Kintbury where Network Rail are replacing a bridge. A firm specialising in 'newt control' was visiting the site each day for about three months after the newt fences went up and the chap visiting told me the purpose of the fence, and that he was there to clear all the newts off the site and the fence was to stop them all coming back.

Honestly, you couldn't make it up could you?!

Talking to one of those nest movers a few years ago he said that they released them into a lake a few miles away and the local gulls learnt to recognise the van. These gulls dived down and grabbed the newts as they swam away after release,  so expensive gull food, as the removal team cost loads.

The post on their website stating planning granted was January 2016 so must be taking a long time to clear the newts.

The newt fence wasn't there yesterday when I drove past. It appeared this morning.
