Smoke alarms on hire fleet

Hi,

I've been hiring boats from various hire fleets for about 20 years now, and never in that time have I come across a hire boat fitted with smoke alarms.

Maybe I'm paranoid (I'm a fire fighter by profession) but is this normal for hire fleets? Seems so, given my experiance. Im amazed that there is no legislation demanding fitting of alarms.

Not quite. Hire boats with existing BSS certificates to the 2002 requirements will continue to be valid until they expire. So it will be a while yet until all hire boats comply with the new standard.

Yes, that's what it said in the link!

But luckily lots of hire fleets are fitting them to all their boats in preparation for the coming season. Not sure why it's taken this long for such a cheap and basic safety item to become standard though. Should have been standard fitment to hire fleets years ago and without making them mandatory.
