We only just made it to Crick and now we are immobilised with another fuel injection pump problem!

So any friendly faces or words of encouragement over the weekend will be extremely welcome - you can read about our near disasters in the news section of our website which I have just updated:

We are only a few boat lengths behind. Anything we can do to help please ask. I'm sure it won’t be too much trouble. Even if you need a bit of warming up in the rain or just a cuppa. We also have a car there for the weekend if needed.

We will be arriving back on our boat Saturday morning.

Sorry to hear you've had to experience so many of the 'joy's of boating' ^_^ on your latest trip. Congratulations on getting them documented btw. I've not started mine this year yet, although may get around to it soon. It is at time like these you wonder if compromise is required, and a modern, less troublesome engine fitted.......and to hell with the purists.

I've also experienced this yesterday. After a week of 'girl friend sitting' I had a day off and went to the boat. Idea was to take the kettle and make use of the electric, wash up the few cups etc. and probably do one or two jobs. Also with it being bank holiday a few friends may be about. This proved to be the case, and I saw a few I've not seen since I left Bardney last september. I was showing him my engine repairs, and how after winding the engine to get the air out that enters the pump through the worn governor spindle, it now starts well again. He was also with me when I made the governor arm last year. So after a couple of successful starts, it suddenly puffed to a halt; inlet valve was stuck open.

A little later I investigated, and found I had to take the head off. Back at home after removing the valve it was just a bit of carbon, and would no doubt have flattened enough to seal if I had kept winding. However the valves were not that good when I ground them in, and it does in fact say to do this annually. Anyway it's a good job I have checked as the exhaust valve does want regrinding. Only thing now is, I've used the same head gasket last time, and it might have been reused before. I stupidly removed a small bit that was stuck to the head, so now it definately wants replacing. I can use it for a while, but will have to do the job twice now of course. I'll get a new one for fitting later.

I'm planning on moving off the moorings at Bardney for this weekend, because the LBC have a cruise to Dunston, and now it raining ....... isn't boating wonderful.

Oh.....girl friend sitting. Well my friends partner (how I hate that word) likes a drink, and it's now getting to be a bit too regular in the evenings. She likes company, and of course I like to help others who have helped me. So I've been keeping her company for a few evenings. Having a few drinks with a pretty young woman is a tough job, but I suppose someones got to do it.

Hope you get Alnwick's repairs done quickly, and have a better trip home......or if you are continuing.

The latest news is that we are likely to be stuck at Crick for another ten days or so. The fuel pump can be repaired but the specialist engineering shop in Hinckley, where we have taken it, closes down for the Bank Holiday and cannot even start the work until Monday, 3rd June.

Thanks for all your support - our website had over 100 hits forwarded from this forum yesterday!

Awwwwwwwww what an awful time you had getting to Crick. But as they say "Things can only get better". I sincerely hope you have a fantastic weekend, and I am sure there will be many people offering help and lots of hot tea.

Enjoy your Crick weekend. It is always a fantastic time.

We are very sorry to have missed you and anyone else who walked up to Bridge 13 - we spent most of the day wandering round the stands making best use of the shortlived fine weather. We will be here for a few days yet, we have a nice fire burning and anyone who does find us in will be made welcome.

Sadly 'Alnwick' is looking decidedly scruffy - we wanted to finish painting the for'ard cabin, bows, deck and poles but the engine problems and other frustrations have delayed us so we shall now have to do it another time!

To make matters even more embarrassing the master craftsman, Phil Speight, is camping just across the canal from us and has seen the tatty 'Dulux Trade' finish which is now showing its age and curling up at the edges like an old BR sandwich - to re-assure everyone, we have already bought six litres of Craftmaster's finest (dark grey) to replace the old finish as soon as possible . . .
