Bought a sump pump as i couldn't get the drain plug on the box.

Used the pump till it was sucking nothing.

Refilled with fresh oil ep 80/90.

Started the engine up let it run five minutes.

Took the gear box cover of and the oil is the same colour

As the emulsified oil that i had just removed.

If its been submerged it'll need flushing a couple or more times. If its a LH 150 box be very careful with the top plate gasket, its crucial that its not damaged. They are also quite expensive.

had this on my gear box had to renew the oil seals front and back

If its been submerged it'll need flushing a couple or more times.

I'd also suggest using something lighter than the EP80/90 for flushing.

 

Trying to flush with thick oil may not get round all the galleries to loosen the emulsified oil.

 

Give it a good overfill with straight SAE 20 and run in forward and reverse until warm. Then drain, add EP and repeat.

 

Fill correctly with the correct grade and start using the box.

 

May need to be repeated a few months later.

Yes, I use a 50/50 mix of paraffin and cheap engine oil and run engine slowly in gear gently changing now and then between fore and aft gears for about 10 mins, drain out and repeat if needed. The paraffin cleans everything up nicely too. Some folk do a diesel fuel mix which I'm not keen on, clutches seem to slip a little for a while after using it.

Also while the top plate is off I'd check and adjust both fore and aft adjustments, bet yer life they've never been done.

So take the gear oil back out.

Fill to the highest level on the dip stick with diesel.

Run engine for 10-15minutes gently selecting forward-astern.

Use the pump to empty then repeat again.

 

Yes. If you use a pump, it isn't easy to get all of the emulsified oil out. If the box has had years of abuse (like many Listers have) it takes a few flushes to shift the oil

 

You are doing the right thing, your gearbox will appreciate it

The problem is you don't need much water in the oil to form a visible emulsion. Most oils have detergents such that water is slightly miscible with the oil. In the good old days the water would simply stay at the bottom of the sump under the oil.

 

How confident are you that you're truly emptying the sump?

 

I wouldn't like to run the gearbox with just diesel with any sort of load. EP oil is chosen for a good reason. Diesel is not miscible with water.

 

Some years ago I recall a concept where oil-water emulsions kept their lubricating qualities. The issue was stability under high temperatures. However I can't find any info on the web that might support those assertions.

 

By now you would have removed all but the last bit of water. I would be more tempted to buy a cheap 5 litres of EP89/90, say:

And after each time making the gearbox work and making sure it gets hot, empty and refill.

Took three flushes moving the gear lever ahead and astern 15min each flush.

Didn't want to come out of ahead first few times persevered with it.

Slipping in and out of gear no problem now.

Checked the oil on the dip stick not a drop of emulsified oil to be seen.
