Featured Posts

Have a Liverpool semitrad and need to give the engine Bilge a good clean out. Any tips how to attack this job without contaminated water being discharged into the canal.

Also I have been reading up about PIG Diesel absorbent mats and pads has anyone any advice on these or any alternatives.

Any advice on order of work.

Note ccer so wet and dry vac not an option.

Many thanks in advance.

Note:Flashing wall and siren for obvious pig related answers, sure someone will go for it ?

Cheap disposable nappies, then get them to a council site where they can be incinerated.

Thanks for that, led me to this

Looks like some good advice

Nappies for the water

Oil absorbent pad for the oil and diesel

Anyone experience with or recommendations for the commercial oil absorbent pads?

Use a hand operated oil recovery pump to suck up the oil and water. decant into plastic drums and then mop up the rest with pads. something like this is good. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aquarium-Marine-Vacuum-Extraction-Pump-Boat-Oil-Change-Fish-Tank-Fluid-Extractor-/272171927123?hash=item3f5eb60653:g:6D0AAOSwoudW6Ektas the small hose can get into the tightest corners. Will only leave a few millimetres behind.

As in Alan

That looks like a handy bit of kit to have aboard. One of the reasons I asked the original question is because the last time I did the job I managed to rot my perfectly good hand water pump trying to use it to get to the awkward corners. Water pump diaphragms don't like diesel

It can be used single handed, as a few strokes of the pump builds up a vacuum in the container. Then you can hold the hose in position for a while before you need to pump again. I used it after a fuel leak dumped about 20 litres in my engine room. I filtered the diesel and put it back in the tank. It's also good for oil changes. Hose will go down the dipstick hole of some engines and gearboxes.

Thanks for that it was something I was wondering about

If you use nappies be VERY careful about how you handle them AND how long you leave them to absorb liquids. They have a horrible habit of splitting and shedding jelly all over the bilge!

Really? I've left nappies in wet bilges for months and they've never split. Mind you, my engine bilge only gets wet, not oily. Perhaps the oil weakens the material.

Someone recommended puppy training pads for the engine drip tray instead of the proper automotive drip pads. I bought 50 from eBay but haven't tried them get. Even if you have to double them up they're still very cheap. I think I paid about 7 quid for the lot.

Reading down that link I came across this gem:

We use pampers and they clean the bilge well but on a different note would a tampax seal a failed hull fitting?
