Pre-purchase Surveyor recommendations near-ish Birmingham

Chris Makin was spot on for me....was amazingly attentive to duty yet happy for me to annoy him all day....thanks to his professionalism I was highlighted to a number extra costs but also advised generally about saving money on boats.

...the upshot was that English Rose was not meant for me but equally I kept my money in my pocket for the real deal after I got let down by the broker sales team.

onwards and Upwards and hopefully I will be annoying people on the cut in 4-5 weeks.

Well actually yes we did get the name of the surveyor from this site and yes it was censored by the admin. I have now lost all respect and trust for everything written in the forum.

And actually the problem when you don't name and shame is that it allows the perpetrators to continue to rip people off without warning. Thank goodness TrustPilot knows this and respects consumer protections. https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.angloeuromarine.com. It has long been the case that customers can leave negative reviews about their experiences with companies, that is our right as a consumer. If the company feels the review is unfair, it is within their right to respond. I informed the surveyor about our complaint and rather than trying to right the wrong he called his insurance company to ensure he was protected. Those are not the actions of a guiltless party. This is what openness and transparancy is about. Keeping quiet from fear of liable simply enables companies to screw people over and get away with it. Proper review sites and forums are designed to be our voice and a way to protect our consumer rights. A negative review will always be judged by the reader and left up to them to decide if they feel it is fair or not, but should never be censored unless it is threatening to ones personal safety. Which this review was most certainly not, quite the reverse.

It's like working with solicitors or any professional person -

You have to give specific instructions as to what you want done

To most customers - they just want a hull survey and that's what you get. A traditional surveyor (and there few of them left) may ask 'what else' - but if there's no empathy between you /him or her, you'll get the basic - especially if you say "keep the costs down".

Peeps on here say "attend the survey and ask questions"  - customers say "I can't attend etc, etc"

NOBODY's going to stick their neck out and say 'such and such is wrong' if not asked.

It's your RESPONSIBILITY to be specific.

!Pah!

We did, we didn't ask to keep costs down but rather said we were looking for a thorough survey as we were newbies and this was a very big deal for us as it was going to be our home. We did attend. We did ask questions. And he had no problem sticking his neck out to say many other things were wrong, just not the life threatening things. It's HIS responsibility to make sure it passes basic health and safety, it did not.

Looks like Trevor Whitling and Craig Allen were also recommended to you first.

Looks like canalworld was given a poor review too!

And accused of being bought off to boot!

I guess that's why you're ignoring all the good advice that folk spent their own good time giving you in your calorifier thread.

If you have lost all trust and respect for the forum, perhaps you should look to contribute on a different forum, happy to help cancel your account if that is what you want.

Lisa - to be fair to the forum and it's members...

Could I just point out to you, that for whatever reason you choose to take the advice of a member who at the time had a total post count of 1, as in it was the first time this person had ever posted on this forum.  The surveyor you choose was only recommended by 1 person, where there were other surveyors who were recommended by numerous people (ALL with a higher post count than 1)

I appreciate when your new around here it can be rather difficult to know who to listen to and who to give a miss, and post count does not necessarly mean the poster is knowledgable in the topic they are posting

We were complete novices when we bought our boat 4 years ago and Trevor Whitling was recommended by a couple of members, we took their advice and to be honest he was bloody brilliant, we'll be using him again for our upcoming BSC.

And the last. He still has a post count of 1.

Lisa  -  Like all forums it is little different to talking to a group of people in a pub.  Some are experts, some narrow but very specialist knowledge,  some with lots of experience and some are full of c**p.  You need to decide who is worth listening to and who isn't.  Once you have worked that out then you will know when you can trust the answers, and as a newbie you will benefit from asking questions on here.  Internet information helped me a lot in my early days of fitting out my sailaway.  Oh and I am not claiming to be expert in anything.

So why not give the forum another try???

In the OP, Lise said:

"We've tried ******* as there seems to be a lot of recommendations for him on the site but he's not available unfortunately at the same time as the marina has dry-docking availability and sadly he said anyone he'd recommend is also fully booked right now, guess it's a busy year for boat buying!"

So it would seem that he was the surveyor of choice, based on previous recommendations, even before any recommendations were made in this thread, (including the one by bosunsmate).

I've seen his name mentioned on here far more as a retired builder than as a surveyor. In fact a quick search finds the most recent recommendation of him as a surveyor in a post in 2013 (apart from the mysterious bosunsmate post).
