So the results have been published and Team Tawny Owl is the winner in a photo finish.

I seem to have lost 37 points in the drink at Ryders Green bottom lock along with the official paperwork. Not happy about that.

JP

Nice one Team Tawny

What on earth was Clarrie playing at - Laurie appears to have been well beaten!

There are also 2 more boats on the full list at the bottom, who must not have given there sheets in and not go points.  Makes their behaviour on the challenge more annoying.

They were 2 boats together going VERY slowly would not let us past.

On the Anglesey branch? That will be where you lost 3/8ths of a point

Bloody hell, how did we do that?

Hmmm sounds like deliberate spoiling behaviour. Were they definitely in the challenge and not random leisure boats?

I hear the occasional boater voice feirce opposition to the BCN Challenge, saying it should be stopped as loads of boaters race around stirring up a load of crap from the bottom to snag the blades of passing boaters for the next three months. Maybe they were people holding this POV and decided this year to try to do something about it...

Just a possibility.

That and then on the Daw End.  Actually I wonder if others have complained about them and they were disqualified.

Anyway enough bitching, congratulations on your win!

They were in the challenge, when one stopped for the weed hatch they used the other boat as a blocker to stop you getting past.  I need to stop bitching though.

I thought you had it in the bag this year John, it seemed to be a short boat year. Judging by the boat lengths I was wrong

Congratulations to John and Roy of the BCNS, they seem to have got the challenge points system spot on

Oh I see. Just plain bad sportsmanship then.

Unless you spent time visiting one of the least used sections on the BCN then you seem to not score particularly well.

I think that's kind-of the point, from their point-of-view.

Given that is the objective that is what you would hope.  In reality though, many of the top scorers, and the winners, did Farmers Bridge and Aston locks, so not totally the case.

Yep, rare stuff like the New Main Line, Farmer's Bridge and the Aston flight. I still can't believe we did such popular areas on the challenge

Tawny Owl did:

Pudding Green Junction (and got the clue), Spon locks, Engine Arm, Smethwick locks, Soho and Icknield loops, Farmer's Bridge, Aston Flight, Tame valley to Newton Junction, Rushall, Daw end (but not the Manor Arms!). Anglesey branch, W&E to Birchills (but not Cannock Extension - good call by Robert the Geek), Walsall canal including the Town arm, Ryders Green, New Main line to Factory Locks, Old main line to Titford including Tividale Quays, and up Titford ending 20 minutes early. We should have done the Titford pools but we ran out of time

Your best bet Rob is to take the paperwork away from Jon

I still don't understand how we could get to the bottom of the Crow with less than an hour to the deadline and find no queue.

Cheers,

I don't understand either how best part of 50 boats got up there in the time, we did not queue either.

I thought the point of the challenge was to promote use of the least popular areas of the BCN, we went through Dudley Tunnel which gets about three boats a year so far less than the Northern reaches but doesn't score well in comparison.

Yes next year paperwork can stay safely inside the cabin.

We have Moomins who guard the paperwork

I think you are right about the points you get for the Dudley Tunnel. On the other hand, as it is no engines and you need a DCT boat to escort you, I don't think the BCNS are trying to promote it. My guess is, if it became a regular BCN Challenge route then the DCT would insist on the boats being pulled by a tug and probably in groups

Of course very few boats fit Dudley tunnel anyway, even if people want to do it.  But I agree that the points for it are poor given the time that it presumably takes.

I think Rob should devise a web based real time electronic scoring system using GPS location information.

We genuinely scored 201.5 points so I will be asking how they calculated our score. It seems we only have the core route at 152.5 points and 5 photos at 12 points counted. We answered four questions correctly for a further 17 points plus arrived at the finish at 1200 and handed in a log (granted not the official one) before 1400 for another 20 points.

We weren't the only crew to lose the paperwork but I would have thought the organisers would have had a spare copy or two at the finish.

For our effort of legging Dudley Tunnel we only really got 12 or 13 points since the 20 points is for Parkhead Jn to Tipton which includes 3 locks at double points and a mile of cruising outside the tunnel.

We knew we wouldn't be in contention but 164 points isn't sufficient reward for the tunnel followed by the complete loop from Pudding Green - Tame Valley - Rushall - Catshill - Pelsall - Birchills - Horseley Fields.

Doing Dudley tunnel scored you very highly in the "stories to tell on Sunday afternoon" stakes, but it's maybe not a sensible part of a winning strategy. The great thing about the challenge is that good stories on Sunday afternoon are as much part of it as winning.
