Francis lamp refurb

I have bought a lamp and want to get it polished. I quite fancy having it silver nickel plated but have been told that it's not a suitable finish for a lamp that is going to be mounted outside. I don't like chrome and I haven't got the patience to constantly polish it if it was polished brass. Any ideas anyone.

If you want a nickel plated appearance, why not try rubbing the enture polished chrome surface with medium grade scotch pads. That should flatten off the finish without removing very much of it. It wiill take a long time, and i suggest you experiment with an area that cannot easily be seen, before trying the entire lamp,

Alternatively you could try carefull sanding with something like p500 production paper, and than remove any scratches with 0000 grade steel wool.

Thanks for the reply David but the finish I want is as shiny as chrome but silver in colour, not brushed.

I had a letterbox polished and stove lacquered well over 20 years ago (it was a Georgian building and the letterbox was huge - bigger than I could find anywhere at the time. I drove past a couple of months ago and it's still shiny.

Polish brass then apply Rylard Incralac - available as spray in aerosols or brush on.

These people do nickel plating and have a good reputation locally (but I have not used them). I suggest you could get advice from them as to the suitability of nickel for outside use. http://www.chromerestorationspecialist.co.uk/finishes/bright-nickel/

Interested to see how you get on as we have a Francis light which I would like to get replated at some time. Set to the widest beam its great in tunnels.

As I understand it Nickel plating is almost as protective as Chrome plating, but it tarnishes and, therefore, needs routine cleaning, which is what the OP wanted to avoid.
