usb charging sockets

Featured Posts

Im thinking about fitting a few in the boat so we can charge phones etc from 12v instead off 12v to 240v back to 12v from the inverter but am having trouble finding good sockets it seems to be car cigarette type ones not flush mounted.

Any ideas? the ones in the bedroom I'm thinking off changing the under cupboard l2 way light switch to a 3 way one to isolate it when not required.

I think the 'prettiest' will probably be the CBE offering like this: http://www.jacksonsleisure.com/caravan-and-camping/electrical/sockets-switches/cbe-caravan-motorhome-12v-usb-charger-socket/

Alternatively you'll have to get creative and make your own I think. Not seen anything really attractive to date.

The CBE sockets require a bezel of course: http://www.jacksonsleisure.com/caravan-and-camping/electrical/sockets-switches/cbe-outer-frames-support-frames/

Seen ones like those on one of the self-build camper forums and the general complaint is the meter is inaccurate, otherwise they are OK.

I have fitted one of those and the meter is OK, either correct or 1 digit out when compared to a DMM spot check. The resolution seems to be the limiting factor. The USB sockets work fine

How much... ? That's definitely the Marine price (add a nought)

These come in lots of different configurations and with different mountings. I fittest a dual one with a cigarette lighter socket in one and a twin USB in the other.

Can something like this be wired into the 12v, so it charges direct? Or one of the standard wall sockets with usb, but blank out the 240 socket bit? Like rustydiver i want a few USB sockets and all I have seen are car ones

Not unless you also have a USB output to feed it with. That's just a socket on a back plate which is intended to be fed by a USB extender.

How much... ? That's definitely the Marine price (add a nought)

Yup. There are cheaper places to buy them than Jacksons but they're the only 'pretty' ones I've come across.

They come in various different charging rates. Select the one that suits your needs. Ours have two charging ports, one rated at 1.0A and the other rates at 2.1A. Link to the units we have below: (Don't think we paid that much though could be worth shopping around)

We also got a double socket that has a 12v cigarette lighter type socket and a USB socket.

The prices are staggering, given it will actually contain no more electronics than the equivalent item that can be plugged into a car lighter type socket.

I fully understand why this is a neater and better solution, but given you can buy the electronics for under a quid, an extra £24 for what it is mounted in seems excessive!

As has been pointed out elsewhere, if it is permanently illuminated if powered, it probably needs a switch in line as well, making it yet more expensive, and not quite the compact tidy solution it initially looks.

I bought a couple of those to fit in our cars and they're very good - like you I'm pretty sure I didn't pay that much.

The prices are staggering...

Similar but much cheaper direct from China

And one of those dual sockets with a ciggy lighter socket:

That's just with a 2 minute Google.

I have had ones that plug into sockets which interfere with the radio and ones that don't, The one that I have built into a socket from e-bay like the one above for a few pounds works well. It seems that are not all equal and price is no guide. They will all be built in China and some better than others but factory gate prices are probably only a few pennies different from the cheapest to the best, what the retailer sell it for is not related to quality. There is one advantage to the plug in type in that you can unplug it when not in use the wired in type will consume a few milliamps even with nothing connected, not really worth worrying about if you cruise or have solar.

For those with a 24v boat.

Many of these say input voltage 12~24V, I connected one to my 24v system and works fine until you charge a smart phone that takes a current over 1A. It overheated the converter which went over voltage and fried the phone. Probably because with the engine running my 24V is more like 28.6v

Fine on 12v supply via a buck converter.

You would probably do better with something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-DC-Car-Power-Converter-Regulator-Adaptor-12V-24V-to-5V-10A-50W-Step-Down-Buck-/131881387382?hash=item1eb4be4576:g:-cIAAOSwNKRXjLJ~

That massive heat sink looks useful

That's what I said, USB sockets are 5V. The OP was on about negating the need to go from 12V to 240V and back to 12V. I was pointing out that it isn't just a case of getting a 240V socket and wiring the USB sockets to the 12V supply as someone suggested.

That would be exciting for a short while
