Cloudinspector
The original air intake on a 2LW would have been an 'elephants trunk' without any filtration. How detrimental to the engine is this?
Tiggs
Depends what was sucked in; but did not really matter too much on these older engines. You find some motorbike engines without filters too - it's just taking a risk, but often they are owned by people capable of doing their own maintenance. matty40s
The original air intake on my 1943 2L2 is also an elephants trunk. It hasn't forgot how to run yet.
Cloudinspector
The reason I ask is I have a Walsh 2LW with a bright orange flying saucer filter. It looks so wrong I want to get rid of it and replace with an original intake. I was a little worried about what damage, if any, unfiltered air may cause. Tony Brooks
Well, if Vetus and Isuzu think its fine for certain modern whizzbang engines to run with out air filters I am sure the same would apply to older less stressed ones. The major danger will be from things accidentally dropped into it while the engine is running.

I also have one with the Walsh's orange filter and have thought of replacing this with a trunk.....however after 11 years I think I would miss it as it provides a useful leaning post when going past the engine. I ran a BMC for years without an air filter it seemed ok. L. PS - thanks to poaching, elephant's trunks are in short supply and Gardner's ones are probably like hen's teeth to get hold of.........
