Northwich to Maidstone

Hi there,

I'm having a boat build at Kings Lock in Northwich (Trent and Mersey) and my mooring is on the River Medway in Maidstone (Unicumes Lane, by Allington Lock). Is it possible to move the boat by water?

Thank you

Yes, it is possible.

I was involved in organising the recent convoy of narrowboats from London to the Medway (and back!). It was great fun, but challenging.

Some of our planning resources are here, and also there are links to various blogs (and also cautionary tales in particular this recent one involving someone who did not know what they were doing. As the RNLI put it "He had purchased the vessel two weeks prior in Chertsey, Surrey, and took the decision to sail it down the Thames and back to Queenborough concluding later that this had not been the best idea.").

Whether this trip is sensible for you will also depend on your boating experience, especially on tidal waters (you are basically at sea on this trip!); whether you can find another boat to go with you, the equipment on your boat (anchor, lifejackets, VHF radio etc).

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hi Carys

Did you ever do this trip? I picked up my boat from the Bridgewater in May, (I remember passing Kings Lock) and have cruised down to the Paddington Arm. I'm going to the Lee / Stort next but have considered going on to Maidstone - that's where my dad lives! He'd love to see the boat.
