  • 4 weeks later...

Many years ago when I was first involved in the licensed trade, pubs regarded beer as the bread and butter but the real profit was made on spirits. Even so a sixth of a gill tot of whiskey or gin was more expensive than a pint. And as for how much it would be if you added a mixer... That was where the real money was made, mark-up on beer was about 10%.

What has happened in the intervening period is that beer has gone up a lot more proportionately. Much of this is to do with the high rents paid to the pubcos and also the high "wholesale" price they are forced to pay (could be double what the brewery would charge to the free trade). As a result pubs have to take a much higher margin on the beer. Same goes for wine, where a 175ml (1'4 bottle) glass of cheap plonk costs about £5 for a bottle of wine which the pub has probably paid £3 for.

Then there are the 'coke' etc drinks, where the post-mix syrup for a half pint of Coke is a few pence but you will pay anything up to £2 for.

I don't think the supermarkets sell beer at a loss, in fact I don't think they are now allowed to.

Your correct licensed premises cannot sell alcohol for less than the vat and alcohol duty is. It basicly puts a minimum price of about 50p for a can Edited by thebfg

£5.20 for a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord at the "Mute Swan in Hampton Court, last Friday.

I'm not surprised that the swan was bloody mute after being asked to pay that much.

Landlord is one of Britain's best bitters, but there are limits, and my limit is below £5!

A free pint every hour! Excellent!

The Macc in Macclesfield does (or used to do) a similar loyalty scheme but they gave a free pint after every forth pint, however this did only apply to the stronger real ales.

The John O Gaunt in Hungerford (K&A) does a loyalty card with a free pint after 10. They stamp the card for each pint and write the date (when they remember) and the 10 pints must be drunk within a month. I don't find this too difficult.

Might not be too much of a problem if they wrote the time either! :D

Tesco £6. That's Southwold prices for you. A bottle of Adnams in there own shop is more than Tesco charge

Our local farm shop gets Adams in sometimes. Got some a few weeks ago for £1 a bottle. They had Broadside, Ghost Ship and Southwold Bitter.

It is a rather splendid shop though.

Got rather happy in there and spent far more than expected.

We did try their gin and whisky though which were rather nice.

We have recently found a shop in Sheffield selling various Adnams bitters. Our fridge is now well stocked!

Adnams Gin is lovely :)

A run up to a week on the boat often sees a visit to an Adnams shop for 24 cans of Ghost Ship and a bottle of gin :)

Our local serves Adnams Southwold, Spindrift, and Dry Hopped Lager all the time and often throws on another beer or two as a guest :)

We don't really find it in the pubs in Sheffield. Occasionally it crops up.

Liam liked the Aspalls cyder whilst we were down in Norfolk and Suffolk. Can only find that in bottles up here as well.

Although he seems to have switched to Rattler from Cornwall now rolleyes.gif
