How to remove rudder on Simon Piper narrowboat.

Featured Posts

I need to replace my stern-tube bearing so must remove the rudder on my Piper boat. When the boat was surveyed I saw an unusual fitting on the top of the rudder.which appears to connect the shaft to the rudder. It seems that a wedge can be inserted into the fitting to lever the rudder and shaft.apart without removing the shaft. Is this correct? Lift boat tomorrow so any advice will be welcome. Thanks.

The tiller will just lift off the rudder, the bottom of the tiller is wedge shaped and fits into a wedge shaped socket on the top of the rudder.

Not quite as simple as that.

It may need some persuasion (heat, crowbars, big banging thing, two people...etc etc)....but yes, this is the basic design.☺

Why not phone Piper and ask them best way to do this.

Dot Piper who runs the Piper owners club forum is always pretty helpful and you don't need to be a member to use it. Google will find the forum, but make sure you get the right one or you'll be talking to someone about light aircraft!

They could still tell you how to disconnect the rudder though

Excellent, thanks! Mine's a Piper too, so a photo will be much appreciated.
