Neil2
We are not liveaboards but we do a lot of extended cruising and for some reason the issue of laundry seems to be getting harder to bear. I don't really know why this is, I suspect it's the thing about your tolerance levels reducing as the years go by. Indifferent summer weather in recent years and having two dogs doesn't help. We used to let things pile up and then have a trip to the launderette, but no-one relishes this and launderettes are fast disappearing (though for some reason Stourport seems full of them). So these days we (mostly) just let things pile up and come home with a shedload of washing. But full time liveaboards must tackle this problem head on so my question is how do people manage their laundry and/or should we just accept that a washing machine is an essential item on the next boat? mross
We have a little twin tub that can be stored in the shower. It's very quick and runs well off our MSW inverter.
Alan de Enfield
Same with us : Twin tub from camping / motorhome shops - about £85, similar price on ebay (inc delivery) Example : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-Twin-Tub-Washing-Machine-Spin-Dryer-Camping-Caravan-Motorhome-Boat-Tent-/122050360420?hash=item1c6ac4b464:g:KoYAAOSwc0FUqW7O Ours uses 260w on wash and a cycle is 15 minutes & 110w on dry with a 10 minute (or less) cycle. mross
The spin is remarkably effective.
Lady Muck
I've a similar set-up except I use a normal spin dryer and a single tub washer I bought on ebay for about £60, that's quite a bit bigger than the norm, it's big enough to do the bedding. The washer isn't available to buy anymore, though, so if it broke I think I'd end up with one of the twin tubs instead. I tend to wash when the engine is on and we are moving, I run both off a cheap Maplin invertor. We do occasionally use launderettes when we cruise, especially ones I know are good. but as you say, some areas just don't have them, it's also the time taken finding them in order to use them. Twin tubs are quite tedious to use, yes, but I find the wash and spin is far superior to an automatic. Edited July 25, 2016 by Lady Muck

Lady Muck
:smugmode: automatic washing machine /built in diesel genny. 50ft boat. thats what I'd have if I were prepared to give up space but I don't. Sadface. They're fine for washing 'smalls' and perhaps one pair of jeans. But not more. So bedding and towels - no. Folks expect more nowadays thats why I bought a bigger single tub, its a 3kg max load (I think the little ones are only 1 or 1.5kg) . I need to be able to do the bedding and towels. It even washes small rugs,
Neil2
I've only ever found one laundrette in Stourport I did say they were fast disappearing... I have looked at those portable twin tubs in the past and concluded there was a little too much negative feedback for my liking, but I suppose you can't really go wrong at £85. Folks expect more nowadays If you clicked the ebay link you would see that infact the capacity is 3.5kgs (about half of a normal domestic auto washing machine). It will not 'do' quilts but we have had no problem with bedding or a combination of clothing. Yesterday did 7 days worth of washing produced by 5 people (4 adults + a 9 year old) It did take 8 loads but it would have taken 3 or 4 loads at home in the full size 'auto'. They are not 'toys'
RufusR
we have a little half sized candy washer under the back stairs of the boat , works a treat though you do need engine running to use , it works great when crusing in summer not so great to dry stuff in winter but its manageable with heating and stove going . Do you have a photo? Under the back steps is the only space i'm prepared to give up, but him indoors refuses to believe that one can fit a washer in that space. We use a dehumidifier for laundry drying but we are on shore power in the winter. Edited July 25, 2016 by Lady Muck
dmr
Liveaboard boats, like houses, need a washing machine. We are lucky in that we have a huge walk through airing cupboard. We keep the engine in there too. These look interesting but I think they are not readily available in the UK yet except from specialist importers https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=small+wall+mounted+washing+machine&client=firefox-b&biw=1280&bih=580&tbm=isch&imgil=U0EGo3v54TrOIM%253A%253BS11Aw8wwazKtnM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.homecrux.com%25252F2012%25252F08%25252F24%25252F592%25252Fmini-is-worlds-first-wall-mounted-washing-machine-that-is-ultra-light-weight.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=U0EGo3v54TrOIM%253A%252CS11Aw8wwazKtnM%252C_&usg=__-wxb0l0rKUdZdA_NourdjVsxKMM%3D&ved=0ahUKEwibkNmNto7OAhWLCMAKHSWLC9UQyjcIXA&ei=F-yVV9uoEYuRgAallq6oDQ#imgrc=U0EGo3v54TrOIM%3A ................Dave
dogless
We're out for 9 months every year. We use laundrettes and have no problem finding them. Very often a visit to a cafe/pub whilst the washing is doing passes on a pleasant couple of hours, and everything is dry back at the boat. The Aylesbury Canal Society laundry list is brilliant, and additionally the internet is a huge help. By the way, there are two laundrettes in Stourport (close to the canal) and I believe washing facilities in the C&RT service block. Lady Muck
Just to add, there are a few laundry services in London that collect and deliver now, they are well used by boaters, I think there is Washbox and Laundrapp. Never used them myself. Just be sure to only send the type of laundry they permit (I think some don't do towels or sheets only clothes) or they'll send you a hefty bill. dogless
No washing at CART service block and one laundrette closed. We used Dizzy Dolly's laundrette, and just further down the same road was a brand new one, so that is definitely two. As we used Dolly's I never checked the service block, so I stand corrected on that (as the man in the surgical boot said). Rog Laundry lust???
