Very Green and Plenty of Rhodies

I would recommend doing the canal in spring/early summer for four reasons:

1) No fishermen until June 16th (as a canal it is quite well populated by anglers)

2) Green lush growth above water

3) Not too much weed in water

4) Plenty of water

The ranger is a great help. He sets the locks for you on the flights and closes them after. You basically hardly see him after first greeting and when he unlocks first locks at 09.30. With say two experienced crew you can whizz up and down.

It's quite suprising if/when you meet another boat it's that lightly used.

32 miles each way , 29 locks each way; a weeks boating but probably better to stay for 10 or so days.

It's as easy as picking up the phone and giving 24 hours notice that you will be at Woodham flight on their appointed opening days for that flight. £40 for a week.

I've never heard so many birds <dawn chorus> in all my life!

We have just booked to revisit the Basingstoke Canal at the end of the month. Although it is only a mile from where we live, we have only cruised it once before, in 2013. It is indeed so very pretty and rural. We stayed a week last time, are planning on two this time. There is a very 1950s feel to the whole glorious canal.

The Wey is very nice, you shouldn't have any problems. The Basingstoke is different, you have to book the Lock flights both ways. We didn't manage to get under the first low bridge, near Aldershot, it's around 5'10" depending on water levels. Well worth the trip (we are told) if you can make it.
