Why is a weed hatch called a weed hatch

Trouble being that the rozzers go straight to the weed hatch on entering a narrow boat with a search warrant. With such an obvious name knowledge of it's traditional purpose spreads like wild fire.

 

Its probably better to hide a small stash in the gearbox :rolleyes:

We've used it once for weed. On the 2014 BCN Challenge just above Parkhead locks we nosed up to the Dudley tunnel portal then reversing back got completely tangled up in weed trying to turn just above the locks.

 

We remember it as being so unusual for the BCN cutting off tangled weed not plastic, wire, clothing, rope etc!

Just had to google 'Mullamatic', seems to be some kind of kitchen implement for grinding up herbs and spices, why would you keep foodstuff down the weedhatch?
