kennyk
hi all, am new here and wondering if anybody knows how to time the valves on a kelvin 3 hp petrol paraffin single poppet valve. it was running fine until the mag sprocket came loose and dropped off stripping some teeth of the fiber cam drive cog I put another sprocket off a two cylinder engine on, it's the exact same but no timing marks on it,,got the engine to run (trial and error) but rough, blowing out oil and fuel, and stops after a minute or two,,doing my head in,,any advise would be welcome apart from using it as an anchor,,,YET,,,,,cheers,,kenny

tom_c
this is copied from the poppet valve service manual, 53. GEAR WHEELS.--If the flywheel is removed, see that it is replaced so that the marked teeth mesh with one another. Should a new (unmarked) gear wheel be fitted, mesh the teeth of it so that the exhaust valve closes and the inlet valve opens with the piston at the top (the inlet valves are those in the centre). When so meshed, mark the teeth of the new wheel with a file. A small piece of chalk dropped in the teeth serves to mark them until the file can be applied. hope this helps Tom
