Miemie, sorry to read your news.

Often life does not allow us what we would like but don't give up on the dream, keep it in a corner of your mind for the future.

One of my tag lines "I don't make plans any more I have dreams instead".

Best wishes.

Very sad to hear. If you don't have any money and no-one will lend you any either then yes, you are stuffed.

Good advice from Ray though!

And you still have the hard-ball way available - save up yourself and stuff the banks.

Good luck.

Miemie, come along to Gnosall anyway, there are other ways of being involved with or have a part of a boat than buying outright. There will be people there to talk to about how they got into boating

Five or six years ago you'd have got double what you wanted. It's a sign of the times. Not having a dig at you but the banks used to be far too flippant at handing out loans. Anyway whatever their reason this time your circumstances will change and in a few years you may well find you can get what you want. I'd suggest before applying for any finance you trawl through the forums of consumer action group. You'll be amazed at the reasons some get knocked back for. Even multiple applications will cause a knock back and if you ever had a payday loan you are a big no no.

Bad news......

BUT.... Not the end of boating for you I am sure, nor being an active member of CWDF, people who participate on here come from a wide spectrum of canal users and whilst not quite fulfilling your dream hire boating and just walking the canals will go some (though not all obviously) way to satisfying your boating ambitions.

I have certainly met none boat owners at a banter so rest assured you will be made to feel very welcome, the ones I met were. You may also get the chance to crew and boat with other members through your contacts on here and banters.

Not the same I know but perhaps it wasn't meant to be and that may have been for a very good reason, the nature of which which you will never know...

Don't give the dream up completely, two years ago I thought that my boating dreams where over.

But after things cleared the other side of the bad things that happened to me, I've now found myself in a position where I can buy a boat

Why not do what I'm sure most of us did - save up to buy a boat? I remember the excitement and anticipation as the balance in the savings account grew bit by bit each month until at last we had the money to buy an elderly but alluring craft. It was hard to be patient, but we're pleased now that we persevered all those years ago, in the 1990s.

Has anyone on here ever taken out "finance" to buy their boat? BMD* funding does not count.

Sorry to hear this, people say it's all for a reason, but when you have your heart set on a dream, it hurts more, get saving, don't have presents for birthdays etc, ask for money towards your dream boat. Good luck. We were fortunate to be able to buy our boat outright. You will be on the water one day if you want it bad enough.

Best wishes

Is that a serious question Mike?

There is no way we could have bought a boat if we hadn't taken out finance for it, or rather a boat of the type, age and spec. we wanted. We were lucky and were able to settle it relatively quickly but there must be loads who take out finance to get a boat, otherwise RoyScot Larch wouldn't be in the business of loaning money for boats.

Never give up on dreams, if youdont have dreams what else can you have, i have been dreaming of owning a NB since i was a lad sat there fishing on canals some 30+ years ago, i have had many GRP boats an dlast year i got a NB, but then i lost it due to health and work problems, i was so gutted to say the least but i am in the hope to get back on the canals next year when i have things sorted, so, i still have my dream, and to make it better SMWBO agreed to living on one if we can get a big enough one.

Dreams are every thing to me, they may never come true but i love to think when i do.....

All best and good luck for the future ;)

Yes it was, and thank you for your informative answer. From other threads I have gathered that RSL is just about the onliest company who loan money for boat purchase, suggesting that it's a quite rare thing and that there's not much call for it, otherwise more firms would be after the business.

Greeno for you, Guv.

I refer you to the lyrics of 'Happy Talk' by Rodgers & Hammerstein:

"You got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream,

How you gonna have a dream come true?"

People who say come along to the banter and join in are correct. I was a regular contirbutor to this forum for a while before my first banter. I didn't have a boat, I didn't ever expect to have a boat. I soon found there were people on this forum who were glad of some crew or someone to lockwheel for them.

No one ever knows what life has in store for them just round the corner and my life has changed beyond all recognition. Get involved locally with the canals. I know CRT needs more volunteers in your area. see what other canal societies are within geographical reach for you to get incolved with. Join in and be part of it all. I know it is not what yor dream is all about but dipping a toe in the water can help you feel closer to the dream

Sorry to hear this. Is there any possibility you could start off smaller and build up slowly within your current financial means? eg buy a smaller boat to start or consider a fair size GRP cruiser until you can afford a narrowboat? Just a thought. I wish you well in achieving your dream of living aboard wink.png

I know quite a few friends who did this. Roughing it for a couple of years on a tiny cabin cruiser, then, perhaps a bigger one, then a small steel boat, then a bigger one, saving a bit more cash at each stage. These friends often have poor credit ratings, little money. Yet they did it.

And to answer Athy - we took out a marine mortgage to get afloat.

Yes as others have said come at it from a different angle, i have wanted to live on a narrowboat for 30 years now could not afford to, family commitments money being tight, i got a job which took me on to canals, for a few years i worked along towpath repairing plant and equipment for company laying cables along tow path it gave me a chance to meat plenty boaters and sort of live the life for a time. Now we are getting very near to getting our first boat exciting, and it can not come quick enough. Never give up fate can change things in a moment, and as is said if you want something fight for it start to save as much as possible little and often builds up, walks along towpath keep dream alive i wish you all the very best, [dont let the buggers grind you down]
