:smiley_offtopic: ASAP supplies reckon used in FX4 taxis as well as the Gypsy......

More used in Taxi's FX3 too i think for donkey's years, far more than in Austin Gypsies i would have thought which was not a great success as it tried to compete with the Land Rover. It also was used in certain biggish BMC vans.

A new engine will cost big money and the fitting will cast possibly a few thousand if done well professionally.

Don't be afraid to look around -/370672019462? on ebay is possibly useful as a donor

If your engineer thinks that it's old he needs to look at some vintage narrow boats where the engine may be 50+ years older than yours.

Yes, my website people are nagging me too about the 1st of November approaching

I love deadlines, they make such a lovely noise as they pass...

I stand corrected

The water pump is apparently the same as an Austin Healey

That old Healey 100/4 petrol engine also was used in a number of cars and vans such as Austin Hereford, Austin Atlantic, Austin Commercial vans and some tractors.

The 2.2L was used in early FX4 cabs, but later on the uprated 2.5L model replaced it.

Probably slightly more up to the job of flogging backwards and forwards to Heathrow!

And then Nissan diesels in the later Fairway black cabs.

I'm far less qualified to comment than some of the posters on this thread but I do have one thought:

If it's the oldest engine your engineer has ever seen when in fact it's a relatively 'new' BMC 2.2, I would question your choice of engineer?? Before looking at shelling out thousands and thousands, I would be trying every avenue to get your current engine back up and running. There are engineers out there who would be highly skilled at repairing your engine, having worked extensively on various old BMCs. Even if you have the unit craned out and fully stripped down and re-built, it would surely still be much cheaper than looking elsewhere.

Or have I overlooked something obvious?

My boat has a BMC 1.8 and if I hit a brick wall with getting it repaired, I'd probably be talking to Calcutt Boats, since they probably know more than most about them. Maybe they can advise on a 2.2 also?

I don't know much about engines but mine is also a bmc 2.2. My engineer tells me a lot of the parts are easy to get hold of, and a lot of engineers love working on them.

As said before, I would look to chatting to a different engineer.

If i may, when funds are low? it pays to search around and search around again. Ive ordered from china some silly things, too in a way get to build on trust and confidence with suppliers, ie currently awaiting delivery 45amp tracer and meter for solar installation at snip fo 150 beer tokens delivered. Ive ordered cable trunking, some wonderfull wire distribution points, level censors etc etc. When i purchased ny nb the engine was solid and full of water (as nb sank ) the assumtion was knackered ?? reality fortuneatly was diffrent.

However at the time i had just spent every penny purchasing boat, and the engine was to be purchased on a credit card

So i searched, at the time i was working on a small imported tractor from china. Thanks to nthis i eventually realised it was a copy of my boat engine exact copy massey ferg35 i think ?? an eveing on allibaba sourcing marine engines prices well. 3 cylinder perkins copy mated to a prm gbox inc control pannel and loom and battery delivered to uk port £895.00 yes £895.00, if it were an isuzu copy with box and loom and pannel £1209.00 now dont get me wrong there copies, just like the little unbreakable tractor. I also note a certain british diesel engine manufacture once from dursley gloucester, has a new range of pictures identicall to those sent to me

From memory, when the 2.2 was discontinued(FX3/4 and some Austin Gypsy,Most Gypsys were petrol)Thorneycroft then used a Landrover unit. This could be a 21/4 litre as fitted to a series L.R.or a 21/5 litre fitted to an early 90.Parts for all L.R.engines are easily available.Dont know if marinisation parts are interchangeable between L.R.and B.M.C.base units. There are a number of specialist taxi breakers. One of them may still have some FX3 engine parts.I changed my engine for an Isuzu unit 4 years ago.I chose Isuzu as it is the engine fitted to a lot of hire boats.Hopefuly spares and mechanical expertise should be widely available. Also it was slightly cheaper than the Beta. The only spanner in the works is that the engine builder H.M.I.has gone out of business.I beieve that their succesors Engines Plus give spares support, although I have not needed anything other than filters so far.Agree with other posts.Dont underestimate the amount of work if you change engine type.

I know an almost retired taxi driver that serviced, repaired and salvaged the 10 taxis he ran probably knows everything about the BMC 2.2 keeps telling me he has a 2.2 head in the corner of the garage going spare, don’t know if this is any help but he is West London based. I will go with everyone else if you know what is wrong with the engine the best thing may be to repair I did this to my 1.5 and it will now outlast many of the new units out there.

My narrowboat is 40 ft long ad my engine has died. I am researching new and recon engines but I don't know which engines are the best, price relative. For new engines I'm being quoted £4-5000. Is it better to go through a manufacturer with 3 year warranty or someone offering a deal? What is the price I could expect for a recon engine and would it be a bad investment long term? I travel up and down the River Thames and Regent's Canal. Is 37hp enough?

I would really appreciate some guidance. Have quotes on new engines made by Beta Marine, Vetus, Mermaid Marine MP range and an independent dealer on Volvo Perkins and Kabuto. Any advice gladly received. Thanks!

When you say it's died it could be something simple you obviously have little or no mechanical knowledge could you explain in more detail what happened, did it suddenly stop or slowly lose power? did it overheat? and remember knowing how it works doesn't mean you have to get your hands dirty it just means you know what needs to be done
