Mitchell Narrowboats on the Move – by Narrowboat

Featured Posts

Some of you will already know that Mitchell Narrowboats is moving from Braunston to its new base at Fenny Compton Marina.

The move should prove interesting as it is being undertaken by narrowboat. This Tuesday, machinery, materials and tools are being loaded onto canal carrier Nick Wolfe’s Aldgate for the journey along the Oxford Canal. Departure is late Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.

How good to see the apposite form of transport in action.

More years ago than I care to remember the Coventry Canal Society bought an ex-council prefab which was situated at Brownsover, conveniently alongside the canal. It was to become our new clubhouse. Once dismantled we loaded it aboard the Admiral class motor, "Moutbatten" (then owned by Ivor Batchelor) and shipped it via the North Oxford Canal to its new home near Hawkesbury. I believe Ivor got some sort of award from the Canal Carriers Association (correct name?) for the most unusual load carried that year.

After all this job and the OP is exactly for what the canals were built.
