looking for a cruising companion

Featured Posts

I am a 49 year old retired single guy, looking for a long term cruising companion to accompany me and my dog and explore the system.

The boat is currently moored in derbyshire for the winter, i am not currently a liveaboard boater or cc'er.

The boat is in useable condition, but i am currently refitting it to fully suit long term cruising including a pram hood cover and a new central heating system to allow for comfortable cruising in any weather.

Ideally i would find someone who is also retired or free of work commitments as i am not looking to race to get anywhere, but as i am keeping my house as a base, regular trips home to visit family etc will be incorporated in cruising plans.

Please feel free to p.m. me if you are genuinly interested.

Rick

What is your preference dc?

Male, female, or not bothered?

And are you looking to travel in company or share your boat?

Obviously in an ideal world i would prefer to meet a woman with a similar passion for the canals, who would also enjoy stopping off at all the places of interest along the way and i would prefer to share the boat, but more than anything I just want to get out cruising long term and explore the system in its entirity, i have done a fair bit single handed over the last 20+ years and now i have retired and have no timescale would like to do it at a slower pace with the right company aboard.

Has Bazza not just retired?

ahh, is that my coat?

Yes he has and he is busy and you are pushing comfort zones

If I wasn't busy I could see myself touring the system in the company of another in the same circumstance - two blokes in their own boats each looking for a girl - not necessarily the same girl! - could be fun but I wouldn't want it to get competitive

Failing finding a suitable lady, as you say, touring the system in the company of another person in the same circumstances, be they male or female would certainly be another option i would seriously consider.

As 'retired' is a form of abuse from my students I absolutely qualify under your conditions although I struggle with an allergic reaction to pram hood covers and therefore would prefer to stay on my own boat. Moreover, we should need to continuously moor cruise on the Caldon and Trent and Murkey as I do need to go to school as I like receiving my very small wage packet despite my alleged 'retired' status.

With thanks to 10 HTf for pointing this out to me today as I fed them pizza - ungrateful sods!

I'm in a similar situ to the OP and having recently completed the four counties solo I can catergorically state that it ain't easy on ones own especially when the boat is 60' It took me two weeks to recover from the two weeks away!!

I have cruised for the last 3 years with another boat with a male on board. We are both retired and single handed, it does make life easier to be 2 boats. We do not live in each others pockets in fact when we are moored for a period as we are now for next 5 days we maybe only see each other to say good morning. We do enjoy going to the pub etc. I think in 3 years I have been on Stan's boat maybe 4 times and think he has been on mine about the same. In wide locks we tie the boats together and single locks I go through first and if no other boat is approaching I reset the lock before I leave. On swing bridges and lift bridges I operate the bridge and he brings both boats through. It is a very good way of travelling the system. Maybe I should start a single persons cruising club!!!

Sounds a good arrangement

I could be interested in doing a bit of cruising while I wait to sell my house and buy a liveaboard. So that could be until next week or next year, depending how long it takes to sell.

My qualifications are;

I am female (well I was last time I looked anyway).

I am not working at the moment.

I am in my forties.

I am not an axe murderer (yet).

I am an over-educated underachiever.

I was well brought up, but am no domestic goddess.

I am not looking for romance.

I would however need to bring my two dogs on board.

Hi Yes I am interested, I am retired a late 60s male New Zealander, used to boats, but blue water boats. I intend coming over to UK next northern summer and intend to go canal boating. Initially I thought of trying for a holiday swap, a canal boat for my Nissan motor home/bus [drive on a car licence]back in NZ. Or buy a boat. But to go along as assistant on an existing vessel makes more sense. Any ideas, this is my first reply so I don't know if I am getting through or not. Cheers Don

Hi, It seems that I am in the same situation as you are. As I am also looking for a crew for the next boating season. I am semi retired , my boat is on the Leeds Liverpool at Scarisbrick.

I guess it depends what you are looking for. I have cruised with another boat for 4 years. We do not live in each others pockets but do socialise when we go to the pub etc. In fact in 4 years I have maybe been on Stan's boat about 5 times and he even less on mine. It works well when doing locks and bridges etc. For me it works as the idea of sharing my limited space (60ft) with someone else sends me into shock. We are presently on Rufford Arm and next year will do Liverpool to York along Leeds and Liverpool. If any other single boat owners would like to join us for all or any part of that journey you would be welcome.
