What have you found in the canal

Featured Posts

We have all found the usual things in the canal, tyres, trolley's and bikes even last week we found two lads and their bikes in the canal on our travels to the Leeds and Liverpool, sending them on their after lending them towels and retrieving their bikes.

But yesterday we flagged down by bystanders as there was a cow in the canal, they had informed the farmer and it was obvious that it was standing on the bottom and was not in danger of drowning so we just cruised on.

The first time out on my Uncles narrowboat when I was 11... we also came across a Cow in the water... but it had been in over night and with nowhere to stand above the water, the poor bugger had drown and was rather bloated by the time we found it. At the time the farmer was stood on the towpath scratching his head.

And over the past few years we've rescued a little sheep, a yorkshire terrier dog, an absolutely huge neopolitan mastiff dog which was rather tricky to get out and involved the owner getting in behind the dog to push it up as me and my Dad pulled it out.

We've also helped to rescue a rather drunk bloke get out of the water after he tipped his dinghy upside down after a boozy night in the pub, aswell as some criminal who jumped in the canal to escape the police only to be welcomded by around about 10 of us on the opposite bank!

i actually saw a cow fall into the nene some years ago. it looked a bit puzzled and then swam along until it could find a place to get out. all the time with the rest of the herd following it along the bank.

personally, i think one of the others pushed it in.

cheers

I have seen several cows in the canal over the years and pulled out a few dogs that were struggling to get a foothold on the bank. But the BEST thing I ever found was

300 feet of 1 inch dia polypropylene rope attached to the propeller. After the initial cursing I couldn't believe my luck as I kept pulling more and more of the stuff onto the rear deck. That was on the Walsall Canal in 1972 and I didn't buy any new rope for 15 years afterwards.

The farm where I lived and worked alongside the Ashby had a bull who used to use the canal as a route to get to the cows in nearby fields. Building the fence out into the cut didn't stop him he just swam round the end. Dead sheep seem to be so common as to be not worthy of mention. I always worried about finding a body, not so much finding it, but what happens if no-one claims it in six months and you get to keep it?

I once "found" a naked man swimming in the Ashby too! Rather more useful was the copy of the Nicholson's guide to the South East I fished out of the vegetation at the edge of the GU. One of the first editions with decent sized maps. It was slightly damp but a spell on the boat roof in the sun and it was perfectly useable again.

The photos by the OP reminded me of an incident about 25 years ago. Somewhere between Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard I rounded a bend to find a cow swimming in the cut. It was severely agitated (eyes rolling) and swimming away from the only section of bank it could access. I stopped engine and managed to block its path and forced it to turn around and using the boat coaxed it towards the accessable section of bank. Watched it climb out of the water and return to the task of chewing the cud. However, what struck me most was the actions of the rest of the herd. They were clearly agitated running up and down the canal bank making noises that I have never hard from cows before. They obviously cared very much for their companion. The realization that even cattle have a sense of community was a surprise to me and has made a lasting change to my outlook on life in general.

A car in a pound at Stoke Bruerne, still with person inside (dead) was the most grizzly I've come across.

Also seen swimming sheep (twice at the same location on the summit pound on the Southern Oxford several years apart), police cars sunk in bridge holes, etc...

Grand Union canal near Brentford last year around May time.I was walking ahead to do a lock and saw something black floating in the canal about 4 feet from the bank. It was a Canon Cybershot digital camera still in its paddes case. In the case was a couple of data cards.I dried them out and could not believe that they would be ok.

But they were fine. One card was blank the other was full of pics of a young couple on Holiday abroad, also lots of shots of a new born baby.plus a few slightly naughty pics, nothing porno though  .:lol:

I still have the cards and have been wondering how i could get the cards back to the rightfull owner.

So if anyone could point me in the right direction i would be very gratefull, and so would the owners.

Dave ;)

We came down the Wigan flight some years ago and got a fouled prop. On groping around we found some red & white plastic tape so started pulling and pulling, then we saw the wooden reel unwinding. We then tackled the foul from the reel end. Wrg found the tape very useful.
