madcat
Algy I remember the A1 at Lloyds, we have a photo somewhere. Shame so many of the dock road pubs have gone. .My favourite was the Sandon Lion, what's happened to that one and the Dominion and the Millers Castle and the Regent? I have been in the Baltic fleet but preferred the dock road pubs.
Timleech
I was surprised to discover today that you can't book a passage by phone - they have to receive the signed forms, physically or you can email signed scanned copies to them before they will reserve you place. Edit - Apparently there's plenty of space on the dates I enquired about, but I can see the potential for issues where people want a date which is 'busy' and they have to send forms by post etc. Tim Edited July 22, 2013 by Timleech

That's almost exactly the conversation I had with them today, the system is very unfriendly. The lady on the new 0303 number (old Wigan number is no longer on the website) was unable to tell me whether there was space on the days I was asking about, I had to submit the scanned forms by email and ask for them. That said the whole process including getting confirmation back by email only took me about 20 minutes, but then I had ready access to a scanner. In my naivety I was expecting to be able to get availability over the phone, and preferably online. Andrew

Andrew the same happened to me..I even bought a new Nicholsons guide, and was under the impression you could ring and book with at least 48 hours notice. I was told by the woman on 0300 number that I could download app form and electronically sign it and send back ( we were wanting to book 10 days before), then got email saying they wouldn't accept it, and were fully booked anyway. they got a 'curt' email back from me saying that their telephone operators are giving out the wrong information. they obviously don't care. we had a lovely trip doing the four counties slowly, and the Caldon. How would you 'electronically' sign the form? It was made clear to me that the form had to be physically signed & then posted, handed in, or scanned & emailed to them. I'm sure it's because they've had lots of trouble with people booking and then not turning up, when others have been turned away because they were fully booked. By having a signed document saying that you agree to the conditions gives them more of a chance of getting some comeback from those who can't be bothered to cancel properly. It does seem unsatisfactory they they can't at least reserve a slot for 48 hours while you get the paperwork sorted. Tim
Peter-Bullfinch
I managed to provisionally book and reserve six places for a group of us from Rufford this April and they were held for us while I went around everyone to get them to comlete the forms. This took a week!. I then emailed all the scanned forms. I found the staff very accommodating.
DHutch
Just a question to people who have done this route, do most people moor up at handcocks bridge the night before to wait for c&rt for the 9.00 start, or do they moor elsewhere & motor in? Swmbo (a native) says its not the best area. We are doing the link in June, if any one else on here is going in on 16 June, please let me know. Cheers. We moored there a night, against Aintree, spending half a day cleaning the boat and engine room before raising steam in the morning. In our batch we where the only ones with the others joining later, although I don't recall where they had said they moored. The only issue we had was that A group of teenagers I took through the boat ended up taking my mobile from the table as I had taken it out of my pocket while cleaning the bilge. Largely my own fault, but heyho. Beats a 7am start! Daniel

Bridge 10 (Melling) is pleasanter, countrified, lots of people out walking their dogs/kids etc but all really friendly (last week). Edit to add - if you're planning to use Brunswick (marina) lock, they won't let you through without seeing evidence of insurance. I was taken by surprise on that, having been through before without question, but my insurers were happy to fax a copy to the marina. It's also not cheap. andyb116
Just to let you know we did moor there for best part of 24 hours on the way in, only trouble I had was when I walked down to the garage @ the end of the road & 3 blokes in a van tried to pick a fight with me. Stopped there on the way back for a couple of hours, but that was only to remove the mountain of plastic bags from the prop.
gaggle
what date did you go in ? These weed hatch visits people keep mentioning i have to say leave me puzzled , it does not happen to me , i admit that i am normally at the front of the line of boats going in and so have no boats in front of me stirring up any debri from the bottom but on the way out i stay back in the queue but still dont suffer from rubbish on the prop. I did make an attempt at opening my weed hatch to look for rubbish on the prop when i reached Salthouse a couple of weeks ago , i was hoping to take a pic of a clean prop on arrival to post on here but my weed hatch seal seamed to be sticking to the lid so i left it. andyb116
We went in on the 16/06/13, the day after the duck sank. We were lead boat & got nothing round the prop, even though around aintree & the strand the canal was full of allsorts. Came out on the 22nd but was last but one on a very windy day, so we all had to keep the power on a bit so probably what helped with the fouled prop. Would do the journey again tomorrow though as we loved avery bit of it.

Agree, the trouble is that they often target multiple topics (17 a few weeks back) so it can be time consuming...the actual posts are automatically removed when the user is marked as a spammer.
