If a theoretical expat programmer designed and built a theoretical canal news and culture site to theoretically rival the competition and this theoretical expat asked the membership here if they would theoretically write as columnists in their spare time would anyone here take said expat up on the offer? Theoretically?

Now, if you were a theoretical reader of this theoretical news site, what topics would you like to see covered in addition to BW, stolen boats, stoppages and general news?

Would a method for you to easily download latest news to your computer for viewing when you can't get a connection theoretically be any good?

------------------------------------------------

Proposed Sections

Maintenance and Upkeep: Leckky bits, Painting, Regular Maint, DIY Improvements

British Waterways Watch

Stolen Boat Alerts

Stoppages Information

Other suggestions welcome.

Theoretically I'd be interested in writing a column where i rant on about how some evil or another (mostly non licenced boats or CCers, and occasionally BW) are ruining the cut, in a sort of daily mail stylee.

Edited to say, In order to theoretically differentiate yourself from the other many many waterways press out there, I'd like to volunteer to theoretically do the theoretical photography for the page 3.

When might we expect to see theory put into practice

When might we expect to see theory put into practice

That's why we're in theory mode right now.

My employment effective 1/1/09 is up in the air. As a result I'm rushing to accomplish projects to help me get some employment and perhaps a trickle of passive income. As a side effect I'm trying to partition time between figuring out what the bugger is going on and spending time with my family so that our nerves hold together.

Additionally while I have a pretty clear idea as to how it has all gone together I've never doen a site this big before and I'm not sure how long it will take once I'm started.

Optimistically, if content could start coming together Jan 1 the site could premier Feb 1.

Sounds like you have the base of a good idea there.

Although I don't think I could be of any use writing for one particular section, I would gladly offer my assistance if you can find a use for it on a long term basis.

I'd be up for theoretically writing somthing - I used to write for a Landrover glossy rag once upon a time(Until they started trying to turn it into a soft porn mag with some Landys thrown in).

Theoretically I'd happily write either features or opinion.

From the LR reg world, one of the nice features is that they often have regular pages about "staff" vehicles - usually give things like milage covered, did it breakdown, did it get muddy... combined with a feature about somthing paticular that happened relating to this vehicle. I can imagine the same with boats - how many locks, did it run aground... then a story about anything from good ways of single handed locking (with this particular boat featured), to where to moor in "x" and what to do once moored...

If a theoretical expat programmer designed and built a theoretical canal news and culture site to theoretically rival the competition.......

Why don't you theoretically have a theoretical conversation with Jon about putting your theoretical new sections into this real site that you are posting on now?

Would the new site be completely designed and built from the bottom up or would you take advantage of one of the many open source CMS's out there?

be better off using an open source CMS than re-invent the wheel. (for example www.modxcms.com). As it would enable rapid development.

Can I have the "Victor" column (or at least the diametrical opposite).

You'll have to fight fuzzy for the privilege. I understand he's hard at work on a piece about how swans are ruining the waterways.

There some good ideas there, thanks I'll keep you in mind for writing

in theory i'd be willing to do some articles on wild-life / fauna and flora - and possibly some hedgerow recipies (in hypothetical site)

That'd be good too

At this point I'm thinking along the lines of WordpressMu there's already a number of large news-like sites built on the framework and I know it is a nice, easy install.
