  1. Hello all, I have a question about where people put their ash from their coal burners. I am new to boating and have been given two completely opposite opinions about getting rid of ash (from coal/wood): "everyone tips it into the canal" "it's bad to tip it into the canal - cool it and put it in general waste" Is there anyone who can give any information about this? I have done tons of research but still no conclusive answer to be found. Would be good to have a link to an authoritative article regarding the subject. Main questions about it: - what is bad about tipping it into the canal? Does it affect wildlife etc? - is putting it in the bin the normal alternative? I understand that chemicals etc in ash are harmful if consumed, however people are already careful in the canal when it comes to Viles disease etc, and generally avoid getting in. So I'm mainly concerned about if it affects the natural wildlife in the canal. Please bear in mind I'm new to this and would just like some advice! I hope I'm not opening up a can of worms. Thank you so much
  2. I have some questions about showers, particularly the waste: Do I need to include a "normal" trap as part of the shower waste? I've been doing some searching and have seen people advocating both using one and not bothering. My instinct is that it's not required as we won't be connected to a drain and therefore there will be no smells to rise up through the plug hole. Also as the water is being flushed through fairly regularly (this will be a liveaboard) there isn't much time for what little water doesn't get pumped out and is left in the pipe to stagnate and become too smelly. I ask because we are not planning to have a shower tray, but instead have a wet room setup with a shallow slope on the floor in the shower area to aid drainage. Therefore this area of floor will be lower than the rest of the bathroom and I'm trying to figure out how much space to allow under the floor for the waste pipe and fittings. I understand that with a Whale Gulper pump the pump can sit above the lowest point and will still happily raise the water up to a skin fitting so currently the plan is that this would be located in a cupboard behind the bulkhead. Would I be able to install a "normal" plug hole (sink waste) like this one, and then a right angled bend, and then the waste pipe leading from that off to the pump? Thanks in advance and please excuse my ignorance, plumbing is something I have very little experience with (so far).
  3. afternoon! i have a query about plumbing a new belfast sink into my galley. the waste fitting has a 1.5 inch screw thread. i want to get hold of an angled fitting that screws onto the base with a nozzle for a 20mm hose to drain the water out through the skin fitting. i have seen a few straight fittings like this, but because of the depth of the sink and the height of the skin fitting i need to have the fitting with a right-angled (or as close to it as possible) connector. all the angled connectors i've seen are for standard kitchen sinks with a screw insert to accept a central screw from the middle of the plug-hole. What i need is one that screws onto a 1.5 inch down-pipe waste. Does that make sense??? any advice would be much appreciated, as ever! to clarify: what i need is a fitting like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAN-SINK-WASTE-20MM-ANGLED-caravan-motorhome-camper-horsebox-boat-plug-bung-/130895601685?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item1e79fc6015 but which screws onto the base of this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BELFAST-KITCHEN-SINK-WASTE-SLOTTED-CHROME-BRASS-METAL-BACK-NUT-WASHER-PLUG-/230829151390?pt=UK_DIY_Materials_Plumbing_MJ&hash=item35be7d549e
  4. Hi, Just about to make a hole in the side of the boat. Looking at my other skin fittings, one is maybe less than 10" above the water line (well below the rubbing strake) one is above the rubbing strake. I'm plumbing a washing machine - read something about the hose needing to be higher than the top of the drum but not sure if its relevant in this case as no domestic waste to draw back old water from or anything like that. I'm tempted to make the whole a bit above the rubbing strake which is nice and high from the water outside... anyone know what's best?
  5. Does anyone know the nearest boater bins in West Drayton? I cant for the life of me find a map on the CRT website. Cheers.
  6. Howdy, One of my first posts was asking about a pump out toilet for a boat I was about to buy. I took the great advice and tried the cassette for some months and it's just not for me. I've read up a lot on the pros and cons and what I want is a pump out with separate tank, not the dump through style. Does anyone know of any kits that are a reasonable price? I have a professional to fit this and have plenty of space under my bed to fit the tank. I would prefer to use one without a macerator due to obvious problems, I have seen this: http://www.leesan.com/index.asp?m=3&cat1=2&cat2=41&p=820&t=75+Gallon+Holding+Tank%2C+SaniMarin+C48+12v+DC%2C+Stainless+Fittingsbut don't know if it's a macerator type. One other option is to get all the parts separately, does anyone know what parts I would need?
  7. Okay so before everyone jumps to the "nothing!!!" Answer im sure there are something because our sinks run into the canal so... for example I throw my vegetable peel out my side hatch, but that got me thinking where is the line drawn at what we can throw out? Ive seen many a boater urinating off the side of their boats so is that allowed? What can we and cant we put into the canal?
  8. I have scoured the forum the best I can, and found a few answers that have informed me, but think I need to ask a fresh question... I have just removed an old plastic pump-out tank - disgusting work but all OK. However, after shifting this tank I discovered that the boat has an older metal waste tank under the floor; possibly built into the hull but I am not 100% sure. The older tank wasn't sealed, with just a piece of wood over the old 'drop-through' hole. I was surprised to find it nearly full to the top with (orange) water. I thought this was old sewage, but having stirred a stick around it doesn't bring up any sludge so am wondering if a previous owner had flushed it out and just left it full of water, which has since mixed with rust. My question is: I want to pump out this old water, but am unsure whether to A) try to dry it out and leave it empty or keep it filled with water which I have read in some places will stop the bottom rusting. My gut goes with option A, but I wondered if it would still rust? Any suggestions on what to do to deal with this old tank (without removing it) and sealing it back up would be much appreciated! (If it helps, the boat is an ex-hire Canaltime / South West Durham build from 2000.) Thanks in advance!
