Hello! Is it straight forward to replace / install a new starter battery to a narrowboat? How do I find out which battery to buy and is there a specific procedure to follow when it comes to removing the old one and fitting the new replacement? Thanks

Some time ago frustration with the state of the waterways caused me to write a 'canal protest song' called 'The Bridge and the Swan' which, when mentioned on this forum, came in for some criticism. Two years later I've been at it again and have produced 'Waterway SOS' which can be found on the 'Songs of the Inland Waterways' website. It's hard to write a protest song which does not oversimplify and is therefore liable to possible misinterpretation so I'd like to make it clear that this is not intended to offend volunteers whose work has been essential in the past in saving our waterways and is continuing to be so. What I object to is the cynical use of non-paid workers to increasingly carry out tasks previously done by paid employees. I'll leave it at that. I look forward to reaction to the song with a little trepidation. The recording is just a 'first effort' and will be replaced with a better quality one where I sing the right words when I manage to record one.

Stupid question time! When is a flat stretch of muddy water a 'branch' and when is it an 'arm'. This came up in the pub quiz last night when the quizmaster asked us to identify a town from a series of clues. One clue indicated that the town began to prosper when the canal reached it. But, knowing our interests, asked whether the lump of wet stuff joining the GUC to the Nene via Northampton should be called a branch or an arm. Over to you.....

Hi all, Forgive me if this question sound stupid. I'm very new to boating but I absolutely love the UK's narrowboats! I however live in Belgium. Would it be possible to use a narrowboat on Belgian canals? Would that also include the more rougher one's with freight traffic such as the "Schelde"? Thanks in advance, ETVL

Hi everybody. Not sure if anyone remembers, but I posted a few months ago with reference to narrowboat door panel sizes (whether standard or not) - we are looking for head for the cut as the children get a little older, therefore don't have a boat as yet. I cut portraits and other items using scroll saw techniques, and would really love to re-create the 'Roses & Castles'. I have discovered that the traditional techniques are slowly dying out - which would undoubtedly be a tragic shame. I have started creating my own templates (as with my other work) and used a technique called Segmentation, to cut the image. I have used the standard Humbrol oils, although some of the mixed colours are not quite true to form. I would really like any comments or opinions, as this would surely help me to get this important traditional art form correct. I'd like to make it perfectly clear that this is not a sales pitch in any way - I'm experimenting in the early stages and here seems the perfect place to ask for advice. Hello all, I have a question about where people put their ash from their coal burners. I am new to boating and have been given two completely opposite opinions about getting rid of ash (from coal/wood): "everyone tips it into the canal" "it's bad to tip it into the canal - cool it and put it in general waste" Is there anyone who can give any information about this? I have done tons of research but still no conclusive answer to be found. Would be good to have a link to an authoritative article regarding the subject. Main questions about it: - what is bad about tipping it into the canal? Does it affect wildlife etc? - is putting it in the bin the normal alternative? I understand that chemicals etc in ash are harmful if consumed, however people are already careful in the canal when it comes to Viles disease etc, and generally avoid getting in. So I'm mainly concerned about if it affects the natural wildlife in the canal. Please bear in mind I'm new to this and would just like some advice! I hope I'm not opening up a can of worms. Hi. I'm doing some research for a book, a thriller. The plot involves a family traveling from Llangollen to Sharpness near Bristol via the canals and finally a small section of the River Severn to the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal to Sharpness . They are doing it in a 30 foot river boat type (birchwood 33 gt) Can anyone confirm that this rout would have been possible in the late 1990's between 1995 and 2000. The rout they want to take is: Llangollen to Hurleston Locks Shropshire Union Canal to Autherly Junction stop Lock Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal to Stourport-on-Severn River Severn to Gloucester Gloucester and Sharpness Canal to Sharpness The places I am concerned about are through Worcester and Gloucester. It seems to be possible now from what I can see here: (https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/canal-and-river-network) But would it have been possible in 1995? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
