Hi there folks, Apologies for being another person looking for information/ history on their new purchase but I have just bought a River class butty by the name of Yeo. I know these dustbin boats arent the most revered of all historic craft (in fact, being younger than 1948 they dont even qualify for historic license discount) but im hoping to do right by this boat and put her back to working trim, albeit with a bit of an 'under bluetops' conversion. If anyone has any information or photos of this boat I would be really grateful as there seems very little online that I can find so far. She seems to have had some extensive work in the past (im guessing in the late 80s) including a nice mahogany and oak cabin extension and having a perkins 4108 with hydraulic drive fitted. If it were at all possible to find out who did the engine install I would be blown away, the system works right now but I would eventually like to move the engine, rebuild the stern to its original butty shape and reconfigure the system into the rudder in the same way as Hampton has so finding that original engineer would save alot of guesswork and research about the old system. Secondly, im hoping to use the hydraulic system to power a generator and also two rams which will raise and lower the bluetops to offer headroom below when in use but can be lowered when travelling or wanting to look trad when other older boats are around Has anyone fitted extra systems like these to their hydraulic drive? Id love to chat if so! Thanks everyone..

Maria, Britain's oldest surviving wooden narrowboat, was built in Marple in 1854. In July this year, the Horseboating Society took her up the Marple Locks, from Marple Aqueduct to Marple Junction, where she had been built. 21 years old boat horse Bilbo, and the entire crew dressed in Victorian outfit, made it a unique photo opportunity! 100 photos of an event by the Horseboating Society are now online here.

As I'm going through doing the difficult design and planning bit the question has dawned on me as to which category we will fit in. On a purpose built pair, the motor will house my workshop and therefore I'm assuming it will come under Commercial heading for BSS. The butty will house us... so does this need to come under commercial (as the whole entity will effectively be "commercial" since the one don't go without the other) or would it be Private? Seeing as how we're planning interconnections between the two boats for leccy from generator, water tank transfer etc, is this going to make a difference? OR... will the whole thing come under "Commercial" at all since it's just us on it and we will simply be running our small business from it? [Ducks ready for incoming as he starts to crawl slowly through minefield....]

I viewed a 70 ft narrow boat the other day that is made up of two hulls welded together. I think it was a Butty that then had a motor stern put on it. The thing is where the hulls join there is a slight bend in the boat. If you look straight down the boat's roof from the bow to the stern it bananas slightly. The owner said the 'twist' in the hull is due to it constantly being knocked bashed a bit in the same place when entering locks, but that doesn't sound feasible to me. Just wondered what others in theses forums, with a lot more experience than I, thought...? Thank you.

Just a heads up for anyone who has or is thinking about the low cost third party only policy from Basic Boat. I have just had it confirmed that the policy does not cover towing or being towed by another boat. A fairly common practice on the canals of course, especially for butty owners. Means we have effectively been uninsured for many years, and obviously wont be renewing! Suggestions for an alternative policy? Live aboard + butty workshop/shed
